In 2 km from the resort there is an ancient town - Piran. It was founded a long time ago by the Venetians. Labyrinths of narrow streets, fortress walls and medieval churches have survived to this day in Piran.

Excursion to local caves

An excursion to the karst area with underground caves, pine forests and limestone rocks will not leave anyone indifferent.

Such is it, Slovenia. Portorož is just the most typical example of this area.

The Postojna Cave is especially interesting. It consists of corridors 20 km long. The excursion begins with the fact that the first two kilometers into the depths of the cave tourists pass by train. And only then the walking route begins.

Also will add adrenaline to the blood and a tour along the Škotsjakskaya cave, protected by UNESCO. The natural roughness has been preserved in it to this day. Here, brave travelers must cross a narrow bridge over a dark abyss with a depth of almost 80 meters. At the very bottom, whole flocks of bats are hovering overhead, like in a horror movie.

Hiking near the city

Walking on foot, you can go to the ancient city of Piran. There is still an ancient church and an observation tower-bell with practically decayed steps. If you are not afraid to take the stairs and go upstairs, you can admire with your own eyes a magnificent view of the sea and the surroundings of the village. It is impossible not to note one more important nuance: Although tourists often equate Portorož with the natural wonders of the planet, prices here are quite affordable even for travelers with average incomes.

In Portorož, the main seaside resort Slovenia, which I will tell you about today, we enter with a delay - we got into a big traffic jam on the road on a narrow mountain road caused by an accident. Separate interesting story, I'll tell you somehow. This is what it is, Slovenian Primorska (aka Oblana-Krashka, aka Coast), which I look forward to meeting with impatience and some apprehension. I have booked here for 3 nights, what if you don't like it? I know that Portorož - modern city... And I don't really like those.

Driving along the road ... My favorite Mediterranean pines, heavy traffic, great weather! I know that it is not very easy to find our apartments, I read the reviews of previous vacationers - "very difficult". However - viva GPS and navigators! You drive in coordinates, drive and only worry about them being correct.

I'll tell you a little about the family that has sheltered us for 3 days. The hostess of the house is Iza. She's Italian. Her husband is Slovenian. The family has many children, in my opinion, 5 children. Children are all adults. Izi's granddaughters were already cheerfully driving around the yard, Son helps in managing the guest house Apartments Vila Toni, one daughter is studying, another one brings up the very children who drive around the territory. An energetic, very bright, benevolent woman (rays of love and her warmest wishes). Iza speaks Slovenian, Italian, Croatian, German and English! How many languages are in your range? (I’ll go and learn English, so it’s not so embarrassing). The hotel itself resembles such a very, very cultural version of our Crimean "birdhouses". What does it remind you of? It can be seen that the family has been earning and investing all its life in expanding the business - now a room has been added, now here. This is where the similarity with Crimea ends, since the level of service (equipment, design of premises, quality of repair, well-groomed territory) is several orders of magnitude higher than our usual ones. Free Wi-Fi throughout, a kitchenette with utensils in the room, a table on the street .. Eh! How much wine was drunk at that table on street overlooking on the sea!

I really love people who do something with love. The Izi family is just like that. They were very comfortable. By the way, the photo shows a view from the courtyard of our apartments. But that line of the horizon is already Croatia.

The only drawback (or merit, how to look) of our guest is extremely steep road to the sea, to the Bernandine beach. But - close to the store and you can go through the meadow to the other side of the ledge, to the beach, which is located outside the town of Piran.

By the way, in order to understand what Portorož is, it makes sense to tell a little about its geography. Although the route Piran - Bernadine - Portoroz - Lucia claims as much as 4 settlements, I would say that all this is one "Big Portorož": 7 km of leisurely stroll along the picturesque coastline, one area flows into another. I liked Bernandin - an area located exactly in the middle between Piran and Portorož. As I have already said, the slides there are not high, but steep. The architecture in Bernandine is, of course, absent.

A little about the sea in Slovenia. I'll tell you about the beaches later. The sea, of course, is not at all like the Mediterranean. Just Crimea, the Black Sea. The same dark. Rocky bottom. Seaweed. Well, Slovenia hasn't been very lucky with the sea. Although "unlucky" is a relative concept. It's just that if you compare it with neighboring Croatia, it's not lucky)). Compared to the same Black Sea - so lucky, probably. Perhaps it is worth telling a little about Pomorska, the coastal region of Slovenia.

Slovenia has been part of various empires and states for almost the entire history of its existence. Here, as it is not very clear to many people who are poorly familiar with the world (and their own history too), a lot of countries in the world did not exist some 100-200 years ago. There were peoples. Countries - no. This is fine. Not everyone even knows that a country like Italy (!) Has existed only since 1861. Let's go back to Slovenia and Pomorska.

During the Middle Ages, this part of the country was part of the Venetian Republic. All the old towns are twins of the same old towns in the Venetto region. Then the coast was under the Austrians and was called the Austrian Primorye. Trieste became the main city of the region, the main sea port Austria-Hungary.

However, after the First World War, part of Pomorsko, together with Trieste and the city of Gorica, passed to Italy. Frankly, for the Slovenes, this is still a wound that has not yet been healed.

They built the city of Novaya Goritsa near Goritsa. And Trieste ... to make it clearer, for 40 km Italy has a narrow strip of land between the sea and Slovenia. These are all former "lost" territories. I heard that after the Second World War there was a chance to return these cities, but with a very, very big blood, to which the Slovenes did not go. Is it so? Do not know. I did not find the information. But all this is sad. I understand how painful it is for the Slovenes. And I know that it hurts them, I heard about it. Wars bring great sorrow to people. Now I know for sure. Don't fight, people! And don't support the aggressors. Don't spoil your karma.

Now Slovenia has a very narrow access to the water - something about 47 km, which the Slovenes decorated as best they could, from the heart.

Well, are we going to Portorož? We will consider it.
Portorož is a port of roses. Doesn't it sound our way? Is very similar.
Portorož became a resort in the distant 13th century. Benedictines from the local monastery of St. Lawrence treated other ailments with rheumatism with sea water. And since the natural Sechoveli salt mines are located near Portorož, the method of salt treatment (don't blame me, I don't know how exactly) was invented by the monks living here too.

However, the most significant impetus to the development of Portorož as a resort was given in the 19th century by Giovanni Lugnano, who suggested using local concentrated salt water and local mud from estuaries for treatment. The first "cool" sanatorium opened its doors in 1908, thanks to Orazio Pupini (Italian, as you can see). A trip "to the waters" to Portorož cost the Europeans a bit cheaper with equal quality than to other resorts on the continent, so customers flocked here, which stimulated the construction of luxury hotels and casinos at the beginning of the 20th century. Here is such a simple, but very effective marketing.

Portorož is called the Slovenian Riviera. True, here are the coolest hotel complexes in Slovenia, a wonderful promenade, expensive shops. Although, if you compare these hotels and shops with the same Italian resorts... well, they are simpler. But I didn’t come here for luxury! Why do I need it? And for new impressions and beauties. And they are here! And, again, standing in a traffic jam on a narrow mountain road, I met a very wealthy German woman who has a yacht moored in Izola. She just loves shopping in Portorož. Yes, and there I bought myself a little dress, so there is no need for me to cry!

What does the city look like? A promenade from which you can swim almost anywhere in the sea. Next is the main central street with shops and restaurants. Then - the first line of hotels. Further, to be honest, we did not go far, but there are also hotels and residential buildings. The houses are modern. Hotels, as you know, are no older than the beginning of the twentieth century.

The sandy beach itself is very inconveniently located - here all the mud from the water is washed by waves and currents. You shouldn't go swimming here, really. Other beaches are better at times. What saves the sandy beach of Portorož somehow? Wooden bridges that go far into the sea. You can lie on the platform, on warm boards, listen to the surf, swim, descending into the water from the bridges. This is what most do.

And the whole embankment is like this, concreted. You can swim.

In the town of Lucia there is a wonderful parking for boats and yachts, where lovers keep their expensive toys sea recreation citizens different countries Europe. The parking lot is such a whole town - a hotel, a shop, and restaurants. By the way, here, near Lucia, the beach is beautiful.

The Portorož embankment is undoubtedly its decoration. And so funny, almost along its entire length, there is one large concrete bench. It's good there! They catch fish, swim ... I really like the sculptures on this embankment and on the central street of Portorož.

But the most pleasant place for me to swim is Bernandine. Yes, a concrete slab and access to the sea from the ladders. But - the sea is deep and clean. You can lie on the grass under the pine trees ... Yes, that's what I did! And watch the children's birthday picnic, which was immediately held locals, this is cool!

By the way, Bernandin, if you are planning to stay in a hotel, is very well located. He stands as if on a pier. Those. on the one hand - the sea, on the other - the bay. I didn't look at the prices. Sorry. This beautiful sculpture is also Bernandine.

And here are the ruins of the church that gave the name to the area and the hotel. By the way, there is also shops and restaurants... And there are a lot of Russian-speaking tourists.

And on the beach there is such a free "toy", which is such a toy model of the "Games of the Patriots", etc. - i.e. obstacle course that must be passed. Cool thing, at least to climb on it, at least to watch the climbers. Well, I just ended up with an advertisement for Portorož in general and Bernandin in particular.

What else is great in Portoroz is the water sports base located right there. These are the ships that maneuver along the bay in incredible numbers. They resemble a flock of funny animals that turn on command, go one way, then the other. Do you see that gray house in the background? Former salt warehouse.

In the evening in Portoroz, it is best to go to a restaurant and enjoy a really decent quality local cuisine th. And it is better that this restaurant is on the sea.

Surprisingly, I liked Portorož. I think because he has such a wonderful companion-neighbor, like the ancient Piran, about which later. I don't mind going back to Portorož again. Somehow. And I will stay with Izi again.

The main natural attraction not only of the resort, but of the whole of Slovenia is the system of karst caves "Postojnska Yama" with a length of 24 km, included in the UNESCO list. It occupies the Karst plateau and is an hour's drive from the center of Portorož (two - on public transport). This is the most popular place among tourists, as early as 1872 light was brought into the caves and railways, in 1945 an electric locomotive was launched. Inside, you can take a train or boat ride on the Pivka underground river. On walk visitors are given an hour and a half. Russian tourists invariably attracts the "Russian Bridge", which remained in one of the caves since the First World War - it was built by our prisoners of war. The heart of the Postojna Pit is concert hall for several thousand spectators. In 1930, the troupe of the Teatro alla Scala performed here.

4 km from the center of Portorož there is nature Park Strunjan with olive grove and conifers. On the territory of the park there is the only lagoon of the Slovenian Adriatic Stuža and the Strunjanski cliff, a sheer "layered" fleece cliff with a height of more than 80 meters.

Another interesting park, “Sechovelskie Soliny”, begins 5 km from the city. Here you can not only enjoy the natural splendor, but also see how salt is mined in the mines - in Portorož it is done according to old technologies.

Urban attractions and leisure

Portoroz is the only seaside resort in Slovenia with sandy beaches, although they were created artificially. It is here that the best hotels in Slovenia on the Adriatic Sea are located: first of all, the large-scale complex Lifeclass Portoroz (Slovenia, Apollo, Riviera, Neptun, Mirna and Grand Hotel Portoroz).

Holidays in Slovenia are more than just spa relaxation. Historical buildings have been preserved in Portoroz and its environs - the ancient towns of Piran, Izola and Koper. The locals are polyglots and know a lot about entertainment. In every even the smallest place, an active cultural life... For half a century, Portoroz has hosted an international exhibition of sculpture under open air Forma Viva. All exhibits of the participants remain in Slovenia (some are in the parks of Portorož, others in neighboring cities), over the 55 years of the exhibition, a collection of 120 sculptures has been assembled.

Entertaining facilities cannot be ignored. The Laguna Bernardin water park is the largest in Slovenia. It is noteworthy that the complex is divided into two large parts, one of which is intended for noisy and active visitors, and the other for those who have come to relax and unwind in silence. The pools use sea water, in winter they are heated (up to 29-31 degrees).

Water bodies

Slovenia is rich in reserves fresh water and its quality is so high that it can be drunk from the tap. From Portorož, trips to Lake Bled, a treasure of the Julian Alps, are regularly organized. This small saucer lake, only two kilometers long, is a tectonic basin. The mountains protect the lake from cold winds, so in summer the lake warms up well, but the swimming season is not long here - only two months (July - August). In the middle of the island rises a tiny islet on which the Church of the Assumption was built in the 17th century Blessed virgin Mary. And on one of the rocks overhanging the lake, the Bled Castle rises. It was founded in the Middle Ages, but most of the surviving structures date back to the 16th century. Anyway, it looks like a classic medieval castle from historical films - powerful bastions, towers with cone-shaped roofs, etc.

Climate

The climate, as in the entire coastal part of the country, is sub-Mediterranean.

Alpine mountains shelter the resort from cold air currents from the north.

Even in winter, the thermometer rarely drops below 10 degrees.

The average summer temperature is 27 ° C.

There is practically no sweltering heat like the tropical one in Portorož.

The beach season starts in July and lasts until September.

Kitchen

Portorož cafes and restaurants abound in seafood delicacies. Of course, there are no problems with authentic Slovenian food. Local wines are very popular, especially Malvasia. Neighborhood with Italy and a common historical past could not but affect the local cuisine, the influence of the Apennines is noticeable even in the names of dishes. Gourmets recommend by all means to try "gambretti" with fried potatoes and cevapcici sausages. The sweet tooth will be impressed by the abundance of all kinds of ice cream. Well, the most Slovenian dish is the potica dessert. This unpretentious nut roll was once nicknamed the "Ambassador of Slovenia" - so great was its popularity.

Natural healing factors

The monks of the monastery of St. Lawrence were the first to notice the beneficial properties of the local water in the 13th century. Nevertheless, until recently, people came to other cities of the country for treatment with thermal waters. However, in 1991, hot mineral springs were discovered in the vicinity of Portorož, and very soon they were overgrown with the corresponding infrastructure, appeared wellness complexes, spa centers, drinking pump rooms. Water is extracted from Of the ancient sea, whose age scientists have estimated at 42,000 years, from a well 705 meters deep. Favorable climatic conditions cannot be ignored.

In the air of Portorož, an increased content of iodine, bromine and, of course, phytoncides secreted by conifers was found. In general, the air salinity in Portoroz is 500 times higher than in large metropolitan areas.

Portoroz is the most famous resort on the Slovenian Riviera, located 145 km from Ljubljana airport and 100 km from Croatian Pula airport. On the one hand, it runs into the small village of Lucia, where the locals live, and at the other end it flows right into the medieval town of Piran, the pearl of the Slovenian Adriatic. This is the most fashionable resort Slovenia, where you can combine relaxation with wellness programs in the thermal pools and the Terme Palace sauna center. Portoroz is the only center of Thai medicine in the Mediterranean, as well as a thalassotherapy center. In July and August, the resort is quite noisy - crowds of tourists come here - from Slovenia, the nearest Italy and Austria, and our compatriots, of course. For the same reason, in summer Portoroz there is no shortage of Russian-speaking guides.
