A little history

Where to stay
As a luxury resort, Biarritz has no shortage of excellent accommodation options. The best historical hotels of the city are located on the embankment, the most famous and expensive of which, of course, Hotel Hotel du Palais 5*, which earlier, in the middle of the 19th century, was built as a residence specifically for the wife of Napoleon III, Empress Eugenie.
Other palaces, today owned by large hotel chains, are also located near the ocean. The closer to the beach, the higher the price. By the way, you need to keep the mountainous terrain of Biarritz in mind when choosing a hotel/apartment. Where on the map it seems only a hundred or two meters to the beach, in reality it may turn out to be a 20-minute walk from/to the mountain. In any case, to almost all the beaches within Biarritz you will have to go down steep stairs, which is worth keeping in mind when going on vacation with small children or people with health problems. That's why the real "first line" at this resort is so expensive. The starting point from which to start a walk around Biarritz is Grand Beach - the central beach of the city, surrounded by ancient buildings in the Belle Epoque style.
However, the problem is that Train Station SNCF in Biarritz is located far from the city center and the beach, at a distance of 4-5 kilometers, and you also have to walk along confusing streets. Therefore, you can only get from the station on foot to the embankment, where the main attractions are concentrated, by bus (if you came to Biarritz for a walk by train, for example, from Spain). By car, you can park directly next to the center in numerous underground parking lots (for a fee), where the number of free spaces is always indicated on the board, or simply on nearby streets (also for a fee).

If you walk from the casino to the left along the embankment (along the Boulevard General de Gaulle), slowly climbing uphill, you will see rocky green cape with a bridge leading to it - one of the favorite places for tourists both during the day and at night.
Further on your left there will be an elegant Catholic Church of St. Eugenia(built at the turn of the 19th-20th centuries) in honor of the patron saint, as the name implies, the same Empress Eugenie, wife of Napoleon III.
The Church of St. Eugenie rises above the so-called ancient Fishermen's port in rocky small bays (it was in this place that there was a fishing settlement since time immemorial), and today the best fish restaurants in the city “with views” are located in the port. Climbing the hill above the port or going around it through a small tunnel, you will come to the main attraction of Biarritz, captured on millions of photographs and postcards - Rock with a statue of Our Lady, which is located on a hill on a cliff in the ocean. A long iron bridge, designed by the architect bureau of Gustave Eiffel, leads to the cliff and the statue. Here are Maritime Museum And aquarium. The museum is simultaneously an architectural monument in the Art Deco style and an educational object for adults and children. The aquarium is home to the inhabitants of the seas and oceans, and its special pride is a large collection of sharks of different species.
If you continue walking along the promenade above the ocean, you will reach another beautiful building - Belza villas, built on a cliff at the end of the 19th century and remembering the heyday of Biarritz as a resort for aristocrats. At the beginning of the 20th century, in the 1920s, there were private apartments and cabarets, as well as a Russian restaurant owned by the son-in-law of the famous composer Igor Stravinsky. Today you can only look at the villa from the outside. After Villa Belza, if you go further, you will see another stunning view from the heights of the cliffs to the coast and the “Spanish coast”. From here the Pyrenees are already visible almost in full view.
Naturally, I have not listed all the attractions of Biarritz and its museums, but the most important ones, which can be seen during a leisurely 2-3 hour walk (perhaps with a break for lunch or dinner in one of the coastal cafes or restaurants). If you get to Biarritz in the late afternoon, I advise you to go to the Rock of Our Lady just before sunset and see the most beautiful sunset over the Bay of Biscay, just for which many photographers and artists come here.

It's no joke - Emperor Napoleon III, Queen Amelie of Portugal, Empress Elizabeth of Austria, English kings Edward VII and George V, King Leopold II of Belgium, Chancellor of Germany Otto von Bismarck and countless princes and princesses rested in these places... Actress Sarah Bernhardt, pianist Arthur Rubinstein and dozens of other world stars gave chamber concerts in the villas and chateaus of Biarritz. Those who combined rest with work were Alexei Tolstoy, Alexei Gorky, Anton Chekhov, Prosper Merimee and Stendhal, Theophile Gautier and Gustave Flaubert... an impressive list of names, isn’t it?!
About the name of the city. Biarritz is translated from the local (Basque) language as “Two Cliffs” (bi arri). According to another version: its name comes from the previously existing Bearrids or Beiarriods “hips” (Basque), that is, “to see,” and means “the place from which you can see.” And finally, the third version of the name, associated with a legend that said that Biarritz acquired its name from the merger of two names - the beautiful Miarritz, a young resident of the village, and her lover, a fisherman from Gascony, whom the girl saved during a shipwreck. What is known from the history of the city... The first to populate the territory modern city, there were Vikings in 840. They settled here because the area was ideal for whale fishing. At first, Biarritz fishermen lived freely. In the Middle Ages they were recognized champions in catching whales. Demand gave rise to such a supply that pretty soon all the whales in local waters were killed. The 15th century became a black century for the Basques - whales stopped appearing in the Bay of Biscay. The last time whales were seen here was in 1686. But the whale still appears on the city’s coat of arms...
Since then, Biarritz has turned into a provincial village. But gradually the Spanish nobles explored this place, appreciated its beauty, the convenience of its bays and beaches, and began to come here on vacation. The French followed them. The Duchess of Montijo began visiting Biarritz in 1838. She always took her daughter, Evgenia, with her. It so happened that Eugenia later became the wife of the future Emperor Napoleon III (nephew of that same Napoleon Bonaparte). Evgenia invited her husband to places she knew well. The husband was captivated by the beauty of the local landscapes, allocated considerable sums from the royal bounties and built a luxurious palace, which he named in honor of his beloved wife - “Eugenia”. This event became no less important for Biarritz than the departure of the whales Pacific Ocean. In one year, the God-forgotten village turned into a fashionable aristocratic resort of the same class as Deauville, La Baule and Nice with St. Tropez. The city still lives on in the names of Napoleon and Eugenia, although a century and a half has already passed since then...
Church of Sainte-Eugenie ( Eglise Sainte-Eugenie) in neo-Gothic style is dedicated to Saint Eugenie, patroness of the Empress Eugenie. It looks quite modern. It is known that the first church dedicated to St. Eugenie was built in Biarritz back in 1856. However, it was later demolished, and in 1898 the foundation stone of the current Saint-Eugene church was laid. Construction was completed in 1903. The bell tower above the entrance was built later than the main building - only in 1927, and bells appeared in the temple in 1931.
A wide staircase leads to the entrance to the church, where the parishioners are greeted by the figure of a standard bearer.
