Bali village in Greece. Light blogger AfterDark2

Bali village of Crete island ( Μπαλί - Greek), located in a quiet cove, surrounded high mountains, between Heraklion ( Ηράκλειο ) and Rethymnon ( Ρέθυμνο ), in the northern part of the island of Crete. We were there in May when tourist season Just getting ready to start and you can calmly enjoy your vacation without crowds of tourists.

Bali village on the island of Crete

Panorama of Bali

It stretches in a long strip along the bay. The village has several beaches with fine grayish sand.

Along the largest beach (near the Talea Beach Hotel) there is an alley with many taverns and bars.

The entry into the sea is gentle, the water is clear, there are no waves, the sea is very calm. Ideal place for kids. You can see the stars at night, a beautiful view.

The place is touristic - there are plenty of hotels, taverns, and various shops. But still quite quiet and calm.

Wandering along the slopes of the mountains around the village is very entertaining - you can observe magnificent panoramas, find treasure buried by geocachers (and their international friends)

View of Bali from the hill

The village is located on mountain slopes, so there are many steep descents and ascents.

There is a pier from which tourist boats depart.

Fishermen's boats are also moored there. Car rental offices can be found on almost every corner.

Transport in Bali village

Getting to major cities is not a problem. The village is located near the main highway. There is a bus stop on the outskirts of the village.

Bus stop to Bali (towards Rethymnon)

The buses are comfortable and air conditioned. They run every half hour or hour, and the fare is low (a trip to Rethymno costs 2-3 €).

Bus stop in Bali (towards Heraklion)

The boundless imagination of local residents turns an old boat into an original flowerbed.

The mountains in Bali are very high, the clouds are tangled in the tops.

Most Greeks take great care of their patios.

Not far from the beach, a little further from the first alley of bars, there is the Gorgon tavern, inconspicuous at first glance. Those who decide to find it will be in for a pleasant surprise - tables located in the shade of trees, a fountain, delicious food and very reasonable prices. For example, any cocktail for 5 € and free nuts :)

How much does a holiday in Bali cost? May 2017.

tour cost

My friends and I started looking for a tour from Krasnodar 2 months before the trip. The price fluctuated quite a bit, and a month before the trip it dropped to the minimum level - 48 thousand rubles for three people for 7 days (6 nights). By that time, obtaining a Schengen visa cost us 4,000 rubles per person. The total amount was 60,000 rubles (20,000 rubles per person). We were lucky to get to the event - all other tourists paid 10,000 rubles more per person for a similar tour. A pleasant bonus was receiving a visa for 3 years (before that there were several Schengen visas).

We found the minimum prices for excursions in the village of Bali in the Spiridon Tour company. Their office is 10 minutes from the hotel (next to the church) - 20 euros for Elafonisi and 35 euros for the Kounas-Chania-Elafonisi package tour. The quality of the excursion is on top level. The guides give their best and, in addition to the standard excursion program, introduce elements of master classes, sweepstakes and competitions along the way. Plus, the organizers offer all excursion participants treats and even wine.

Food and products

In a picturesque cafe at the port, we paid 35 euros for a meal for three people. We ordered squid, grilled shrimp and baked mussels, Greek salad and wine (by the glass). A bonus was a compliment from the establishment - desserts and the local alcoholic drink raki. On the beach we often ran to the nearest cafes for coffee. Price 2-3 euros.

Souvenirs and other goods

We bought few souvenirs. Mostly it was food. At the hotel we were given discount coupons for the nearest supermarkets - 5 percent. We bought olives (from euros per package, good ones from 2.5), olive paste - 4 euros, soap (also olive, of course) - from 1 to 2 euros per piece. Hats from 7 to 15 euros.

Cost of services and entertainment

A tuk-tuk runs along the sea between the beaches of the village of Bali. The cost of the train is 5 euros in both directions.

Impressions from a holiday in June

We vacationed in Crete in the village of Bali for 10 days at the end of June 2018. Last years I go to the sea mainly in June. This is the beginning of the season, there are fewer vacationers than in the “peak” months of July and August. At this time, as a rule, the sea has already warmed up enough and the weather has settled. During our vacation, almost all days were sunny (the last three days were a little cloudy, there were short periods of rain, but very little). The water temperature was between 22-24 degrees. So the weather was all very good.

Family holiday

There are quite a lot of vacationers with children in Bali, because... There are 4 bays in this village (three small, sheltered from the wind). Everywhere there is a good gentle entry into the sea. True, the village is quite “mountainous”; many hotels on the second line need to be climbed up. Therefore, with small children it is better to choose buildings closer to the sea. I met quite a lot of older couples. For family vacation the resort is quite suitable.

Where is the best place to stay?

We rested at the Sofia Mythos 3* hotel. I booked it in advance (back in February) at a familiar travel agency; the tour itself was from the tour operator Biblio Globus. BG had flights with Rossiya Airlines, which I liked. At the hotel good feedback on “Tophotels” and “Tripadvisor” (rating above 4) - I usually consider such hotels for vacation. The hotel is popular - closer to the season there were no more places in it. The cost for two with HB meals turned out to be about 89 thousand (if I had paid for everything at once, it would have been cheaper, but I paid the other half of the cost in May, when the euro exchange rate jumped quite significantly). I booked a studio room in the Mythos building by the sea - I wanted to have a full-fledged kitchenette with the ability to cook something hot for lunch, and to be closer to the sea.

We arrived at the hotel at ten in the evening (departure from St. Petersburg at 16-15). Everything was fine with the transfer, but not quite with the check-in. For the first night we were placed not in a “studio”, but in a “standard” one on a hill behind the pool in the “Sofia” building. The hotel manager Svetlana said that the hotel was full and she would give us the paid room the next morning. I didn’t get too upset, because... Svetlana assured that we could check in after nine.

“Standard”, where we spent the first night, had its advantages and disadvantages. The advantages include the location not too high on the mountain, comfortable beds, a bathtub rather than a shower in the bathroom. One of the minuses is the terrible creaky air conditioner (we turned it off at night, opened the windows, it was not stuffy). In addition, the windows of the room overlooked the neighboring buildings - so no beauty or sea was visible. I read that the “standards” located higher on the mountain have a plus - a view of the sea. They put a lunch bag in our room (cheese and ham sandwiches, eggs, tomatoes and oranges), because... We were late for dinner. It was very nice that they took care of us, for this the hotel can undoubtedly be given a “plus”.

By ten in the morning the next day, after breakfast, we were already in our “studio”. It is, of course, much better than the “standard”, lighter, with a luxurious balcony overlooking the sea.

Our room had two comfortable beds, a sofa, a large wardrobe with big amount hangers, table, mirror, one bedside table, dining table, two chairs. Floor - tiles. There is a kitchen corner with a sink, a small amount of dishes, an old electric stove, and a small refrigerator. There was only one big old pot for cooking; there was no frying pan. During the rest, I cooked cereals and pasta for lunch as a side dish, and in the stores we bought something meat (sausages, salami, jamon).

Wet cleaning - every day (only on Sunday the cleaning lady did not come). Linen and towels are changed every three days.

The air conditioning, unlike the first room, was good and not noisy. We used it often, especially in the morning and afternoon, when the sun was shining through the window. There are no TVs in this hotel (maybe they are provided for an additional fee, I don’t know). Because Our room was close to the reception and we had a good Wi-Fi signal. Other tourists had to use it at or near the reception, but we could surf the Internet while lying in our beds. The bathroom was in good condition, but the shower was not very comfortable - narrow, with a curtain.

I can say the following about the food at the hotel. Breakfasts from 8 to 10 and dinners from 19 to 21 are held in the Sofia building. There are two terraces overlooking the sea and some of the tables are located by the pool (it’s sunny there in the morning, it’s hot to sit). The food format is buffet, at dinner all drinks are paid. The quality of food is average. For a hot breakfast several times there was an omelet with additives (pasta, mushrooms), stewed tomatoes with bacon, beans in tomato, one type of porridge. There are sliced cheeses, sausages, olives, tomatoes, cucumbers. Cookies and puff pastries are served with tea. There were not always successful hot dishes at dinners. On some days there was even nothing to take (greasy, overcooked). The side dish includes rice, French fries, sometimes mashed potatoes, carrots and frozen peas. Of course, you won’t go hungry, but everything is quite modest. Fruits included oranges and watermelon. For dessert - ice cream, protein creams, apple pie, jelly (dishes vary).

What to do at the resort?

In the village there are small shops, souvenir shops where you can buy traditional Greek products (olive oil, honey, sweets), and beach goods. You can go for a swim in all the bays. Our hotel was located in the third bay, but we also went to the other three. In the second bay there are inflatable pay water attractions. Of course, you can go to restaurants. You can ride a train - it runs throughout the village (costs 3 euros one way, 5 euros there and back). As it is, there is nothing “remarkable” anymore.

In addition to excursions offered by “your” tour operator, you can also buy excursions from “local” travel agencies. There are several of them: “BaliTravel”, “Spiridon Tours”, “Aitidis Travel”. There are Russian-speaking employees everywhere, they communicate in a friendly manner, they will help you and give you advice. The local prices are lower. But this, I think, is due to the fact that the groups, as a rule, are combined and the guide can conduct a tour in parallel in two languages (Russian and English), and in museums a guide does not accompany you, but independent visits to the objects are provided.

I will give examples of prices for excursions. At the "Biblio Globus" excursion "Knossos Palace - Labyrinth of the Minotaur with archaeological museum Heraklion" (Mondays and Thursdays, from 8 to 18) cost 54 euros, plus a combined ticket for entrance to the palace and museum - 16 euros (for adults over 18 years old). The same excursion is offered by “BaliTravel” (on Fridays, from 8-30 to 17-00) – 32 euros + 16 euros for entrance tickets.

We went on one excursion from Aitidis Travel called “Knossos - Heraklion” (from 7-45 to 14-00) for 25 euros plus 16 euros for tickets to the sites. We had just the option of a bilingual group; we visited the palace and museum ourselves. We liked it - it wasn’t tiring, the girl guide tried her best and told interesting stories on the way to Heraklion and back.

From Bali you can take a cruise on the Santa Maria boat. On Monday, Thursday and Saturday he swims to Rethymnon (there is a stop for 3 hours for a walk), on the way back there is a stop for swimming. Cruise duration is from 9-30 to 17-00. Cost – 30 euros. On Sundays there is a cruise to Panormo (from 9-30 to 13-00). The cruise includes swimming and parking in Panormo for 1 hour. Cost – 20 euros.

You can travel to Rethymno and Heraklion on your own. Buses run every hour, starting around 6-15 am. The stops are located on the route. From our hotel we walked to the stop at Rethymno for about 35 minutes. You can get to the stop by train. It took us about an hour to get to Rethymnon (we were transferred to another bus along the way), and we got back without stopping in 30 minutes. The ticket price is 3.8 euros. In Rethymnon you can go to the Fortezza fortress ( admission ticket 4 euros, they give you a map of the fortress in Russian, in the brochure you will also see a map of the central part of Rethymno). The city has several interesting old objects, many shops with local goods.

As I already mentioned, there are 4 bays in the village. All beaches are good. In the first (largest), second and third bays the beaches are sandy, with gray sand, and in the fourth - pebble (sand is added under the sunbeds, but the entry into the sea is on pebbles). All beaches, except the first one, are quite cramped, paid sunbeds and umbrellas (6 euros per set) are placed very tightly, there is practically no place to sit with your own mat and umbrella, but we somehow found a place. The sea is clean, transparent, there are fish. The banks are beautiful - views of the mountains.

What can you buy?

The shops at the resort are small, mainly beach products. Some products can be bought in stores where they buy local residents. These are the stores “Festos” and “Elinika”.

About product prices

If we talk about products, then, for example, a package of cupcakes 180 g costs 2 euros, baklava 240 g – 3.60 euros, dessert wine “Mavrodafni from Patras” 7.90 – 8.20 euros, “Metaxa” 5* 0.5 l - 14.55 euros. T-shirts with a Greek theme from 6 to 12 euros, souvenir soaps from 0.6 to 2 euros, sundresses 16-20 euros, summer leather shoes from 25 to 40 euros.

Where can I eat?

We were only in one tavern, Akrogiali, not far from the hotel. One time before leaving we decided to have lunch outside of our room.

About the quality of food and service

The kebab was not entirely successful; some pieces were stringy. Potatoes, rice, and vegetables are placed on the side dish. I really liked the juice! After lunch they brought me a “compliment” - pieces of watermelon and melon, fruit ice, and candy.

How much does it cost to eat? About food prices.

We took lamb kebab (13.50 euros) and watermelon juice (2.50 euros). For two with tip we paid 36 euros.

Pros of holidays in Bali

Beautiful nature and wonderful sea. Quiet, not noisy.

Disadvantages of holidays in Bali

The village has a large difference in elevation, making it difficult to walk. Second line hotels – on the mountain.

Is it worth vacationing in Bali?

Of course yes. I’ve been “loving” this village for a long time on the Internet, but I only managed to go this year. We liked. If the difference in altitude doesn’t bother you, feel free to go.

Until recently, the “honey” village of Bali was a simple fishing village in Crete. IN Lately connoisseurs of a calm and peaceful holiday prefer this resort. Here you can relax to the fullest on the sea, admire sunrises and sunsets, enjoy solitude and romance.

How to get there

Situated in the north of the island of Crete, Bali is located between Heraklion and Rethymnon. Therefore, you can get to this resort by flying charter (in summer time) or regular flight to Heraklion. The distance of about 40 km can be covered either by taxi or by bus.

Hotels

Due to the fact that Bali is a small village, there are almost no luxury hotels here. Why almost? Because there is still one here - Filion Suites & Spa. The remaining eight hotels are 3* holders. But judging by the reviews of guests, they offer excellent service, excellent rooms and cleanliness. Therefore, when choosing a “troika” hotel, you can be pleasantly surprised by its high standard.

In addition to hotels, you can also rent apartments, studios, and luxury villas. Hotels and guest houses built right on the slopes of small mountains, so almost all of them offer their guests stunning views of the sea.

Beaches

And the sea is worth admiring. Picturesque coves with a small harbour, crystal water and endless sea - doesn’t this improve your mood?! The beaches here are both sandy and pebble. Herself coastline does not differ in duration and breadth due to separate bays. But all beaches are equipped with sun loungers and umbrellas, toilets and changing cabins, some have taverns where you can have a snack at lunch. You can also find canoe rental centers and diving centers.

It is worth noting that the beaches are convenient for families with children due to the fact that the bays, sheltered from the wind and waves, are always warm and calm.

Shopping

Like all resorts, there are many souvenir shops selling all kinds of traditional souvenirs and everything you need for a beach holiday. For more significant purchases, it is still worth visiting Heraklion or Rethymno.

Restaurants

On the streets of the city you will find 14 taverns and restaurants, where you can get a huge portion of some Greek delicacy for relatively little money.

Sights and excursions

Those who are “tired” of picturesque sea views and slow life can go exploring neighboring villages and natural beauties. After driving 30 km you can get to Rethymno and see how rich this city is.

Or you can go to the villages:

  • Margarites is famous for pottery
  • Panormo – romantic place, where you can wander through the old, narrow streets decorated with flowers
  • Axos - an ancient highland village in traditional Cretan style
  • Anogia is completely different from other cities of Crete in its way of life. Also known as a weaving center.

Each of them has its own atmosphere, way of life and way of life. You can also see the famous rich history Melidoni cave.

Lovers of noisy parties until dawn and thrills - this greek resort not for you. On the island of Crete, and indeed Greece itself, there are many other wonderful places for a fun time. Families with children who want to take a break from the city noise and bustle, to be in peace and quiet - you are welcome here!

Sunny Greece, located in the center of the Mediterranean, seems to be created by nature itself for a beach holiday. Both on the mainland and on numerous greek islands there is an incredible number of resort towns and beaches. Each of them is attractive in its own way, but today it’s the turn to talk about the village of Bali, the most popular beach resort Krita. From the review material you will learn where Bali is located on the island of Crete, and what remarkable things it offers to tourists.

Initially, Bali was an inconspicuous village on the island of Crete. But when the Greek government begins to develop tourism and recreation for foreign guests in the country, the measured life of the village changes dramatically. Hoteliers did not pass by the picturesque bay, and soon the former village of Bali turned into a modern tourist “Mecca”, which is mentioned in any brochure about the resorts of Crete.

Location

The village of Balion is located on the island. Crete between Heraklion and Rethymno, almost in the center of the northern border of the island. The convenient location makes the village stand out among other resorts in Crete, because... Often tourists vacation with constant movement around the island. When you stay in Bali, you get accommodation surrounded by... largest cities Crete and the ability to create a convenient route to anywhere on the island.

How to get to Bali resort

To visit the beaches of Bali you should go to West Coast on Crete.

You can get to Bali via the main island highway E75. The easiest way to get to the village is from Heraklion, Rethymnon and Chania, because... this road directly connects these cities. The distance to the village is 51 km from Heraklion, 34 km from Rethymnon and 94 km from Chania.

For a better understanding, we attach an image with the Bali resort marked on the map of Crete.

Transport

From anywhere in Crete you can get to Bali by taxi, rented car, or bus.

Transfer

If this is your first trip to Greece, then it is better to pre-book a transfer from Heraklion airport to Bali. The driver will meet you at the terminal, load your things into the car and take you to the hotel in comfort. The price of the trip starts from 60 euros. The exact cost depends on the company and arrival dates, but general rule is this: the earlier the order is made, the cheaper the trip is.

Buses

Runs from the airport public transport, but to get to Bali you will have to change trains in Heraklion. Buses No. 1 and No. 78 pick up passengers from the airport terminal and take them to the city bus station “A”. From here they depart to the west coast of Crete intercity routes. Such routes are served by KTEL buses, which are easily distinguished by their green or beige color.

To travel by bus to Bali, travelers need to take the Heraklion-Rethymno or Heraklion-Chania bus, departing from the bus station every hour. They make a stop on the highway not far from the village: the village itself is 2 kilometers from the bus station. You can cover the remaining distance on foot or by tourist train, which runs once an hour. A train will take tourists to the resort in 20 minutes, and the price of the trip will be 2.5 euros.

Car rental

And another way to go to Bali is to rent a car. There are many rental offices at the airport and cities of Crete, so you can choose a car and draw up a contract immediately upon arrival. But we would recommend using online services and booking a car in advance. So the prices are cheaper, the choice of cars is wider, and there is more confidence that there will be no problems with rental.

Things to do

The village of Bali on Crete is one street with branches of roads to beaches and bays. But, despite its small size, the town has a developed infrastructure, offering tourists interesting entertainment and excursions.

Bali's greatest asset is local beaches. Travelers will find well-equipped coastlines surrounded by picturesque cliffs. Thanks to natural barriers, storm winds do not penetrate here and the sea surface is calm and unshakable. The sea without waves and with a gentle entrance into the water is a big plus for a holiday in Bali with children. Parents do not have to worry about the safety of their children, and the children can swim to their hearts’ content in sea water.

As you can see, the resort of Bali on the map of the island of Crete is adjacent to major cities and popular attractions. They will satisfy your thirst for knowledge here cultural traditions and the history of the island.

Tours and attractions nearby

The easiest way to get to know Crete from Bali is to take a bus and go sightseeing in the city of Rethymnon. The Venetian embankment, forts, museums and monuments will allow you to join the local culture and get to know the real Crete.

A trip to Heraklion or Chania will require a little more time and effort, but they will deliver commensurately more impressions. Heraklion is the capital of the island, with an incredible number of attractions and entertainment centers. And Hanyu is considered the most beautiful city Krita.

You can go to unusual natural places or visit other resorts. Near Bali there is Melidoni Cave, which is striking in its beauty and dramatic legends. Also nearby is the monastery of Arkadi, an important monastery of Crete. It attracts attention with its unusual bell tower and the beautiful Venetian facade of the main building.

It is also worth visiting the potters' village of Margarites, where original ceramic products are made. A trip to the mountain village of Krana leaves an incredible impression, where you will be introduced to the real life of Greek shepherds. Here tourists will learn local traditions, learn how to milk a goat, and cook Greek dishes and enjoy the picturesque views of Mount Psiloritis.

Separately, we note excursions from Bali to the famous volcanic island Santorini. Speed boats depart directly from the local bay, so the trip will be seamless. Travel agencies organize one- and two-day cruises from Bali to Santorini. We would recommend purchasing a trip for 2 days in order to enjoy the unique sunset against the backdrop of an extinct volcano.

Tourist trips to Rethymnon, Chania, Heraklion and the largest water parks on the island of Crete are also organized from the Bali resort.

Resort entertainment

In the village itself places of interest no, and there is not much entertainment.

Going to the beach is the main way to spend leisure time in Bali. You can also take a walk in the mountains, enjoy the impressive scenery and do beautiful pictures as a keepsake. A walk along the main street, along which a tourist train runs, is also entertaining.

From sports entertainment We note the diving center, rental of catamarans, jet skis and diving equipment.

Restaurants and shops

In the center of Bali village and on the beaches there are many small cafes, taverns, shops and souvenir shops.

Local service offers tourists delicious dishes different countries and the usual fast food. Naturally, the majority of the menu is occupied by Greek cuisine: National dishes and drinks cost from 4 to 15 euros. In the establishments, tourists are greeted very nicely, and the portions are served from the heart, so that no one leaves hungry.

Beaches and bays of Bali

In the village of Bali on Crete there are several cozy coves that have made the resort popular. The following beach areas are located on the coast of the village:

  • Livadi;
  • Evita (Karovostasis);
  • Varkotopos;
  • Limani.

All Bali beaches are located on the shores of the Cretan Sea, washing northern part islands.

Livadi, located close to the E-75 highway, attracts the most tourists. This is the largest sandy coast in Bali, but it is open to all winds, so the sea is often rough. The beach area is equipped with showers, changing cabins, sun loungers and umbrellas. A promenade with restaurants, shops and tour desks stretches along the coast.

The second most crowded beach is Varkotopos, sheltered by a small cove. The only disadvantage of this place is the road that runs near the coast.

Limani Beach is the busiest beach in Bali. It is located in a bay near the center of the village, where most of tourism infrastructure. The beach area is adjacent to the local port, and it is here that the pier is located, from which excursion ferries depart.

And the farthest and smallest bay of Bali is Karovostasis. It is often called Evita beach, because... There is a hotel of the same name nearby. The pebble coast, sheltered from the winds by a cozy bay, is, according to tourists, the most picturesque and attractive place in Bali. Families with small children like to relax here, because... the beach is small and the sea is calm and safe.

Crete Bali – weather at the resort

Like all of Greece, Bali receives tourists from late spring to late autumn. During this period, the weather here is dry and hot: the air warms up to +30 degrees, and sea waters up to +26°C. Precipitation is rare and in small quantities.

From November the rainy season comes to the village, which lasts until spring. Therefore, during the winter period, the vibrant resort life in the village calms down.

Bali Hotels

Comfortable hotel and beach holiday– exactly what many tourists expect from their vacation. And the resort of Bali (Crete, Greece) meets these expectations 100%. The most popular hotels near the beach:

It is worth considering that Bali is a mountainous village and hotels are often located on a hill. If you are traveling with children or elderly people for whom long descents and ascents are difficult, then check the location of the hotel in detail.

Have an exciting trip and enjoy your holiday!
