The king of Macedonia - Cassander - was distinguished by particular cruelty and lust for power. However, he was also a connoisseur of literature and an urban planner. It was Cassander who restored Thebes destroyed by Macedonian and founded two cities - Thessaloniki and Cassandria.

Settlements with ports and markets arose here in the 4th century BC. e. There are 44 settlements on modern Kassandra.

On the territory of many equipped beaches there are bars and cafes that provide free sun loungers if you order a cocktail or other drink (1-5 euros).

Kassandra has beaches with a blue flag, that is, an international quality mark. The Blue Flag is an award given since 1987 to beaches that are known for their clean water and safe swimming.

Kassandra is a place that will appeal to many tourists. Of course, the main attraction and pride of these places is the unique nature with the gentle Greek sun. For this alone, it is worth visiting Kassandra in 2020.

Kassandra is a charming peninsula located in the western part of Chalkidiki. Nearby lies Thessaloniki. Kassandra is connected to the rest of the region by the amazing bridge from Nea Potidea. This village is the starting point of every traveler who comes here. It is difficult to call Kassandra a peninsula, since it is completely separated from the territory of Halkidiki by the Gulf of Potidea. It offers stunning views of the surrounding area.

In ancient times, the name of the peninsula was different. The Greeks called it Flegra ("place of fire"). Ancient Greek myths say that Giants lived here. Creatures were born from the drops of blood of Uranus, which fell on the body of the goddess Gaia. It was here, according to mythology, that there was a historical battle between the Giants and the gods of Olympus for world power. The giants threw huge rocks at Olympus, and Zeus sent lightning to Phlegra, burning the peninsula to the ground.

One of the myths tells that the rock thrown by the Olympian gods during the battle crushed the Giant Seismos. However, the block did not kill him, and he remained on Cassandra. Since then, when the Giant is trying to get out, the Earth is undergoing an earthquake. The rock thrown by Poseidon crushed another Giant - Aphos. A famous mountain is named after him. The war between the gods of Olympus and the inhabitants of Phlegra continued for a long time. Everything changed after the prediction given to the gods. It said that the help of a mere mortal would decide the outcome of the battle. Then it was decided to turn to Hercules, the son of Zeus and a mortal woman. The warlike young man defeated Alkeon, who was the first among the Giants. This meant the complete victory of the gods. The daughter of Alkeon, Pallini suffered bitterly and, unable to stand it, threw herself into the sea with her sisters. The wife of Poseidon Amphitrite did not let them die. The goddess wrapped the girls in sea birds. The name of the eldest gave the name to the peninsula. It changed in 315 BC. The Macedonian king Cassander, having chosen the peak, built Cassandria there. Then the name spread throughout the territory.

Now Kassandra is a modern resort that welcomes guests from all over the world. Greeks also come to the peninsula to take a break from the routine and relax. Equipped beaches, developed infrastructure attract tourists. The traveler is greeted by kilometers of openwork coastline, turquoise waves of the sea, and most importantly - an active nightlife: traditional taverns, luxurious restaurants, creative bars, discos, clubs - you can find entertainment to your liking on every corner. Along with this, Kassandra is a place of thermal springs and a wide choice of places to stay: from small cozy hotels to expensive apartments, from family hotels to luxury hotel complexes. Lovers of a beautiful holiday will appreciate golf courses, marinas, SPA centers.

Tourists of the younger generation who love to relax after sunset will appreciate the Kallithea area. Stylish clubs are found at every step. Before that, there is always the opportunity to drop into one of the many cafes or bars, which are enough in Halkidiki. The evening will not be boring on such a wonderful journey. Local restaurants invite you to taste non-standard dishes from chefs or taste traditional Greek cuisine - the choice is yours.

These places are significant for the religious world. Saint Athos and the monastic state of Agion Oros are a place of pilgrimage for parishioners from all over the world.

The Petralona Cave keeps many secrets. The unique natural monument was opened in 1959. A year later, the skull of an archanthrope was found there. Studies conducted by scientists have shown that the found remains belong to the oldest person in European territory: he is about 700 thousand years old. You can see not only fossils and skeletons. The cave also demonstrates wonderful natural figures: stalactites, stalagmites, stalagnates.

The Kassandra peninsula is full of myths. Around every corner lies a touch of history. Who knows, maybe in just a minute the Giant will again make an attempt to escape from the ground. Scientists, for example, say that the nature of the peninsula was completely different, the heights of Kassandra are fragments of a meteorite or the consequences of an eruption of an ancient volcano, and where it was, sulfuric smoke is still visible above the surface.

Among the cities of Kassandra, Kallithea deserves special attention. The bays of Lidiko and Anthony Quinn fascinate with their extraordinary beauty, opening space, allowing thoughts to wander freely. But this is not the only advantage of Kallithea. The tourist infrastructure of the highest class includes everything that a modern tourist needs. Coming here means brightening up life with bright shades of nightlife, and therefore young travelers will appreciate the choice of bars, discos, and clubs.

Afitos

Afytos is a small settlement on the territory of Kassandra. Ancient legends say that the first titans were born in this place, and later their battle with the gods took place.

The town has existed for over 300 years. In ancient times, this picturesque settlement was a large metropolis that minted its own coin. Afitos was destroyed several times. The last major reconstruction of the city began in 1827. At this time, stone houses atypical for Greece were erected. Many buildings and architectural structures erected in the 19th century are today the main attractions of Afytos.

On the main square of Afytos is the church of St. Demetrius, built in 1859 on the ruins of a temple destroyed by the Turks.

St. Demetrius is very revered by the Greeks. In the temple dedicated to the Saint, ancient icons, mosaics and other ancient religious objects are kept. The architecture of the church is a three-nave domed basilica.

Not far from the church, in a 19th-century stone mansion, there is the Folklore Museum. The museum's collection is made up of household items, kitchen utensils, tools, works of art donated by local residents. The museum perfectly reflects the traditions and culture of the settlement.

Near the sea there is an unusual place called “stone balcony”. Here, tourists and residents of Afytos walk along the promenade, enjoy beautiful views and relax in restaurants and cafes.

Kallithea

The resort of Kallithea, popular among tourists, was an ancient religious center many millennia ago. It was in this place that archaeologists found the remains of the temple of Zeus-Amon and the sanctuary of Dionysus.

The Temple of Zeus-Amon is the main attraction of Kassandra and an important historical value for Greece.

The place for worshiping the gods was in a picturesque place with incredible views and springs gushing nearby. Here the inhabitants of the island brought gifts to the gods, performed rites and rituals. They decided to build a temple on the spot, but it was not possible to build it quickly. In the second half of the 4th century BC, a temple dedicated to Zeus and Amun was erected.
The temple was surrounded by statues and columns, inside of which there was an open space. At the entrance to the sanctuary, a stone threshold was built, into which spring water fell.

During the Roman Empire, the temple flourished - an amphitheater and an altar were added.

Not far from the temple is the cave of Dionysus. The ancient Greeks worshiped the god of fertility and winemaking in this beautiful place surrounded by springs.

Archaeologists suggest that the sanctuary existed from the 8th to the 2nd centuries BC. e.

Today, only ruins remain of the majestic religious buildings. They are valuable historical objects. Entrance to the territory of the ruins is free. Every tourist can visit the ancient places of pilgrimage.

Potidea

The history of Potidea goes back to ancient times. This area has been inhabited since antiquity. The city fell several times and rebuilt again.

The main attraction of the settlement is the Nea Potidea canal, dug in the first century BC. The canal was surrounded by fortified walls dating from the era of Justinian. The channel separates the peninsula of Kassandra from the mainland of Chalkidiki. Previously, the canal was transported by ferry. Now a large bridge has been laid over it, connecting the peninsula with the mainland. From the height of the bridge, incredible panoramic views open up. The canal was reconstructed in 1930. Near the canal, fortress walls have been preserved, which in the distant past protected the peninsula.
The main religious places of the island are the church of St. George, the church of Panagia Faneromeni, the church of St. Nicholas and St. Eustathius.

Nea Fokea

Modern Nea Fokea was inhabited in ancient times, and the modern look was betrayed to it in 1922 by settlers.
There is an obelisk in Phokea. In the 20s of the last century, the archaeologist Felix Chartue carried out excavations on the territory of the settlement. At this time, terrible events took place in the city - the massacre of the Greek population. Having hung French flags from the windows of houses, Chartue sheltered many local residents. The obelisk was erected in memory of the bloody incident and the scientist who saved people's lives.

Not far from Fokea was the village of St. Paul, resolved approximately in the XIV-XV century. Every June, St. Paul's Church hosts a religious festival in honor of St. Apostles Peter and Paul. According to legend, St. Paul took refuge in the local cave from his pursuers.

The Holy Spring has been preserved in the temple, to which a dark narrow underground corridor leads. Wall paintings and a marble column also survived.

Temple of Poseidon

During excavations in the quiet fishing village of Possidi in the 90s of the last century, archaeologists discovered the temple of Poseidon.

Surprisingly, the sanctuary was not mentioned in any chronicle, although it was a cult place for more than a thousand years. Archaeologists discovered 4 buildings, the oldest of them dates back to the 11th century BC, the rest - to the 5th.

Sacrifices to the god Poseidon and sacred rites were performed in the temple. Fragments of marble with the names of the people who made the sacrifice were found near the temple. Male names predominate, because sailors worshiped Poseidon.

Kassandra Peninsula: where to go on vacation?

Hello, friends! Today we will talk about the peninsula of Kassandra - the "Pearl" of Halkidiki. The peninsula is rich in natural scenery and clean beaches. Millions of people from every corner of our planet dream of visiting here to swim in the turquoise waters of the Aegean Sea, see ancient sights and, of course, taste traditional Greek cuisine.

Where to rest on Kassandra? Which hotel or guest house to choose?

In the article, I made a selection of good offers, based on the reviews of tourists and the recommendations of "experienced" ones that I found on the forums. I tried to choose both budget and luxury options. Read mini reviews with prices, maybe these offers will interest you.

Halkidiki is the heart of international beach tourism. The blue of the Aegean Sea deservedly received the mark of the "blue flag", which is assigned only to the cleanest beaches. Have you already imagined how beautiful it is here?

The peninsula of Kassandra is the "first finger" of Halkidiki. It is named after the strategist Alexander the Great. Previously, the peninsula had other names. But let's not go into history.

Unique monuments, clear sea, air filled with the aromas of forests and herbs, picturesque landscape, resorts with developed infrastructure and comfortable hotels on the coast - all this makes the Kassandra peninsula a paradise for young people and families with children.

The Mediterranean climate ensures hot summers. The tourist beach season in Kassandra begins in May (air - 24-25C, sea - about 20C) and ends in October (air - about 22C, sea - 20-22C). The hottest months are July and August.

Watch the video clip, which perfectly conveys the beauty of the peninsula.

Now let's talk about where it is better to relax on Kassandra. In my opinion, these options may interest you. I selected them based on a different budget, there are both expensive accommodation options and economy ones.

Resort Pefkohori

Pefkohori is an ideal place to restore strength and health. This small village harmoniously combines mountain and sea air. Around pine forests, clean beaches and silence. A great option for a relaxing family holiday, right?

Adriana Studios

Among the good budget offers, Adriana Studios apartments can be distinguished. Not far from them is the sea. The beach is clean and fully equipped, relaxing here is a pleasure. Minus - in the peak season is crowded. Many more complain about unstable Fi-Wi and sometimes poor-quality room cleaning.

I would like to note: under the phrase “filled with vacationers”, you probably imagined the clogged city beaches of the Black Sea. But it's not. There is enough free space for unhindered movement.

The hotel itself is modern with good rooms, you can choose a view of the sea or mountains. Relaxing in Adriana Studios will be convenient for everyone. But you should not expect any attributes of high-star hotels. Suitable for a relaxing holiday with children. Price - from 36 euros per room per night. Many tourists note the convenient location of the hotel and the optimal price / quality ratio.

Hotel Aeollos

Among the more expensive options, Hotel Aeollos can be noted. It is located next to the beaches of Xenia and Chaniotis. The only drawback is a large number of people during the season. As was the case with the previous hotel.

Hotel Aeollos offers its guests decent conditions for recreation: modern rooms, spa, restaurants, dry cleaning, laundry, free parking, animation program. The hotel is suitable for a relaxing pastime with the whole family. The price per room per night is approximately 108 euros.

Art Boutique

If it is possible to relax on Kassandra expensively and luxuriously, then I advise you to book a room at the Art Boutique hotel. The studios and apartments feature original décor. There is a kitchenette and other amenities for demanding guests. The beach is clean and right in front of the hotel. A great option for a family. Are there any downsides? I did not encounter negative reviews about Art Boutique. The cost of the room is high - 158 euros per day.

Kallithea resort

If you are going to rest on Kassandra, pay attention to the resort of Kallithea. Active tourists will especially like it here. Bars, clubs, restaurants, work for guests around the clock. This is a place for young people. And for those who get tired of the nightlife, you can go to explore the sights. From anywhere in this resort, a beautiful landscape opens up, which also has a positive effect on the emotional state.

Maria

From budget options, I liked the Maria Hotel. Kallithea beach is 200 meters away. If you wish, you can relax by the pool. Tourists note the cleanliness of the rooms and the responsiveness of the staff. Who, by the way, is Russian-speaking here. Of the minuses, the lack of parking on site.

Such accommodation on Kassandra is suitable for budget travelers. Despite the rather low price, the conditions are worthy. The cost of a room per day is only 30 euros.

Pallini Beach Hotel

In the middle category, I liked Pallini Beach. The hotel is located on the seafront. Beautiful green area, several pools. A great option for both young people and families with older children. There is a volleyball court, a bar, entertainment events are held regularly. In general, you can relax here with dignity, a good option for living on Kassandra.

Night clubs are located near the hotel. This makes it noisy in the evenings. The cost of a room per night is from 68 euros.

Villa Christie

Do you want a luxurious holiday? Rent a villa in Kassandra. For example, at your service is a guest house - Villa Kristy. Located 150 meters from the chic beach (marked with the Blue Flag).

The villa provides everything for quality rest of guests. The staff is always polite. Tourists leave only positive reviews about Villa Kristy. Price per villa per day - from 230 euros.

Chanioti Resort

Where else can you relax on Kassandra? Pay attention to the resort of Chanioti. Tourists speak well of this place of the peninsula.
Lively resort town. Local taverns will delight you with a variety of Greek dishes. Lots of shops, but no branded ones. Very beautiful promenade, nice to walk along the sea in the evening.

Bella Greece

Among the inexpensive hotels on the Kassandra peninsula in the village of Chanioti, I was attracted by the Bella Grecia guest house. It is located about 150 meters from the sea. The beach is clean. The guest house has a snack bar and a children's pool. Barbecues are often organized. The rooms are modern and fully equipped for a comfortable stay.

After reading the reviews, I learned that many consider the main disadvantages of the hotel to be its adjoining the road and the poorly lit route to the store. But the cost of the room will please you, per day - from 20 euros. Agree, a very good price. Therefore, such shortcomings can be closed eyes. As you can see, you can relax on Kassandra on a budget. Do you think so too?

Ostria Seaside 4*

A more expensive option is the Ostria Sea Side Hotel. It offers a Greek restaurant, an outdoor pool and modern rooms with views of the Aegean Sea. The beach is very clean.

This is a good place to stay with small children. Of the minuses - not too active entertainment program. But not everyone needs it. Sometimes tourists complain that the room is poorly cleaned. But mostly the reviews are positive. The price of a room on knocks is from 120 euros.

Villa Aelia

A luxurious option for staying at the resort will be the Aelia Beach Villa. It is located right on the beach, with French windows offering stunning views of the sea. The beach is clean and empty. Guests can rent a car or a yacht. Ideal for privacy. Suitable for everyone who is willing to pay about 350 euros per day. It is a pity that not everyone has the opportunity to relax so chic.

Resort Afytos

Afytos is the revived history of ancient Greece. One of the most peaceful resorts in Kassandra. Cozy streets, picturesque houses immersed in greenery, gorgeous beaches and clear sea. It is comfortable for everyone to relax here.

Palatino Apartments

For a budget holiday in Afytos fit Apartment Palatino. Located on a hill, 15 minutes walk to the beach. For guests, there is a tennis court, basketball and mini-football courts, self-catering apartments, a children's playground with slides and other amenities.

There are practically no young people. Tourists in the reviews note "tired" furniture. On the plus side, helpful hosts and a beautiful view of the sea. The cost of a room per day is from 40 euros. A little expensive, of course, given the distance from the beach, but the stunning sea view justifies the inflated price.

Apartments Boutique Niovi

The Niovi Boutique apartments can be called an average vacation option. The main disadvantage is that it is about 7 km to the beach. This is a great option for family accommodation with a car, it will be difficult to relax without a car.

The apartments are new, with high quality finishes and stylish design. Comfortable pool area. Even despite such remoteness, the hotel deserves your attention. Couldn't resist telling you about it!
The price of a room per day is from 90 euros. An ideal option for the conditions that the hotel offers.

Afitis Boutique Hotel

For those tourists who want to relax in luxury, I found the Afitis Boutique Hotel in Kassandra. It seems to me that every traveler will feel here as if in a dream. It is located in a picturesque garden. Well suited for "passive" tourists, for whom comfort is important.

The hotel has a private beach, 2 outdoor pools, a massage room, a hot tub, 2 restaurants and rooms with sea views. I don't think it's worth mentioning how top-notch everything here is.

The downsides are minor: tourists complain that you can't store your food in the minibar, and that it's too quiet here. Apparently, active tourists should not go here. The price of the room is high - from 440 euros.

Prices in all resorts of Kassandra are approximately the same - 40, 100, 200 euros for economy, standard, luxury, respectively. One thing can be said about the beaches - they are all clean and beautiful here. No wonder they got the Blue Flag.

In its southern part, it branches into three smaller peninsulas that look like three fingers. These are Kassandra, Sithonia and Athos.

Kassandra is the western "finger" of Chalkidiki. Rather small in width, this Greek peninsula impresses with its exotic nature and pristine beaches. Having come here to relax, you will remember the enchanting atmosphere of Kassandra for the rest of your life and, no doubt, you will want to come back here again. Let's talk about what to see in Kassandra, and about the features of local recreation.

Sights of Kassandra in Halkidiki

The Kassandra peninsula was once named after the famous king, who was the son-in-law of Alexander the Great. The first settlement dates back to the 4th century BC. Later, a fairly large port arose in its place, trade flourished here, and in our time the tourism business has developed.

Of course, the main attraction of the Kassandra Peninsula in Greece is its unique nature. Tourists coming here are surprised first of all by the intoxicating combination of clean air filled with the aromas of conifers, sea breeze and mountain herbs, and then by the magnificent views of the bay (from the east side) and the sea (from the west).

If you are fond of archeology, then a trip to Halkidiki cannot fail to please you. The places where the remains of primitive people were found, ancient caves decorated with rock paintings, the archaeological complex called "Olinth Museum" and, of course, the ancient town of Olynth - all this cannot but captivate true connoisseurs of history.

The monastery of Agios Athos is a place where only men are allowed to enter. For a long time, many Orthodox from all over the world have been making pilgrimages.

The temples and churches of Kassandra also have their value. Take a tour of ancient religious places - the Church of St. Demetrius, the Temple of Zeus-Amon and Poseidon, the Sanctuary of Dionysus, the Acropolis of Antigone and others.

Holidays in the resorts of Kassandra in Halkidiki (Greece)

Of the 44 settlements of Kassandra, we note the following as the best resorts.

Unique natural resources, picturesque landscapes, a sea with clear and clear water, golden beaches, centuries-old heritage of ancestors, ancient monuments and sights, traditional settlements and elite tourist resorts - all this is a real paradise for those who come to Kassandra - the "finger" of the Chalkidiki peninsula .

The purest waters of the Aegean Sea wash the coast of the Kassandra peninsula. The width of the first "finger" is no more than 15 km, and the height above sea level is 353 m. The coast is characterized by impeccable and well-groomed beaches. The sight of tourists is delighted by beautiful bays and emerald hills with a unique flora. The saturated greenery of the hills gently descends and turns into a sandy coast. Kassandra, like Greece itself, is famous for its pleasant Mediterranean climate. On the eastern side of the peninsula is the Gulf of Toroneos (Τορωναίο Κόλπο), and on the western side - Thermaikos (Θερμαϊκό Κόλπο).

Enchanting aromas of thyme and coniferous trees intoxicate visitors from the first minutes of arrival. Do you want to be in a fairy tale? The magical beauty of the coast gives visitors such an opportunity! The unique atmosphere of Halkidiki is felt in every little thing, from the sea air to the outlandish vegetation. No less interesting for tourists are the residential areas of the Kassandra peninsula. Where else can you find such ancient and mysterious chapels, temples, monastery farms? Traditional residential buildings form a single whole with luxury hotels, which are famous for high-class service and the most comfortable conditions.

Resorts of Kassandra

Kallithea village- a resort where life is in full swing. Its name, translated from Greek, means "beautiful view" - and it does not lie. The landscapes of Kallithea are really impressive, which attracts numerous aesthetes here. On the clean sandy beach of Kalithea, awarded the "blue flag", the Ammon Zeus hotel is located. Near the hotel is the archaeological area of the sanctuary of Zeus Ammon, who was considered the God of hospitality in ancient Greece.

Nea Potidea- (the city of Poseidon) spread over the ruins of the Corinthian colony. Today it is a resort that is popular with the youth audience.

It is also attractive because you can not only come here for exciting excursions, but also settle down for the whole vacation. It is in Pefkochori that the famous Greek honey is produced, so if you manage to make friends with one of the beekeepers, you can see the process with your own eyes.

Afitos known as the "stone balcony" of Halkidiki. The eastern coast of Kassandra, where this resort village is located, looks like a balcony from the side. It offers breathtaking views of the Gulf of Toroneos. Most of the houses here are built of stone, so Afytos visually stands out from the surrounding settlements. Walking along its narrow streets, you seem to be transported back to the 19th century.

A resort that grew out of a small fishing village. Today it is a paradise for lovers of fish dishes. The main attraction of this village is the chapel of St. Paul, in which, according to legend, the path to an underground source that works wonders begins.

Nea Moudania- a resort for those who prefer a more modern holiday. This city, without exaggeration, can be called a trading center. Here you will find clothing stores (from mass to branded), jewelry, souvenirs, as well as summer cinemas and concert halls. The sights of Kassandra are represented not only by pearl beaches. Rest on the peninsula also includes an educational program. Adherents of city life and shopping lovers will also not sit idle. In each institution, the guest can count on a warm welcome, high-quality service and, of course, a delicious menu.

Every connoisseur and gourmet will be able to find in the Greek abundance something to their "taste and color". In small restaurants you can taste unsurpassed home-made liquor - you will not find anything like it in all of Europe. By the way, European cuisine is not uncommon for local cafes, but still, you should not miss the chance to get acquainted with national cuisine.

Thought out in Kassandra and leisure for the little ones. Amusement parks offer exciting programs for young tourists. Standard games are not limited here. For example, an impromptu labyrinth of the Minotaur was built for kids, after passing through which they can plunge into the fascinating story of Theseus and feel like a hero. Beforehand, children will be told in an accessible and colorful way this legend, which is known to many, but it sounds most interesting from the lips of real Greeks.

During an active beach holiday, the days will fly by unnoticed and harmoniously flow into hot nights.
