A few hours after take-off from Moscow - and now our friendly company has landed at Larnaca airport, and around is a scorched, yellow, flat terrain with rare bright green bushes. And we are on a gorgeous highway at high speed in a bus from "Biblio Globus" rushing to Ayia Napa, our haven for these 10 days. This place (resort town) is called by many Cypriot Ibiza, and the very name of this place comes from the Venetian monastery of the same name, which was once built here.
Our 4-star hotel, surrounded by a green hedge, roses, some beautiful flowering vines (as it turned out, we arrived in the “yellow summer”, and everything blooms only thanks to daily care and watering, and the “green summer” lasts for April). On the territory there are two swimming pools, a paid tennis court, a volleyball court. Here tourists are offered studio rooms, where everything that is necessary for a comfortable stay is provided - air conditioning (free only for Russians, all the rest Foreign citizens pay a certain amount of euros to use it!), toaster, refrigerator, kettle ... And just think! - a juicer (thanks to which every morning from local oranges - unsightly, but very juicy! - we made juice for ourselves. And our morning became ORANGE!
Since everything was "all-inclusive", we didn’t deny ourselves anything! The food was tasty, a little monotonous, but still you could choose something for yourself (I personally liked the arugula salad and gilthead fish).
The beach near our hotel was of volcanic rock - not very welcoming. But soon we were advised to visit Nissi Beach (city beach) - turquoise sea, white sand ... TALE! And the question of where to sunbathe and swim was resolved once and for all! The beach is free, while umbrellas and sun loungers are paid (2 € per piece).
except beach holiday we wanted to get acquainted with the history and culture of Cyprus, its sights. For this, our tour operator Biblio Globus offered many different excursions, some of which we purchased.
Our first trip was a visit to one of the most beautiful (and richest!) Monasteries in Cyprus - the Kykkos Monastery, which for 900 years has experienced many hardships (for example, in 1821, the Turks took out gold and silver from here on 16 camels!)
The monastery contains the icon of the Kykkos Mother of God, which has great miraculous power (it is hidden from the eyes of pilgrims with a silver frame). There is a museum at the monastery, where objects of worship are presented: the clothes of ministers, the most ancient icons, and so on. There is also a souvenir shop where anyone can buy icons painted by monks and consecrated, honey and wine from monastic farmsteads. It is not customary to visit the monastery in shorts, short dresses, so everyone who is unprepared is given dressing gowns.
The second excursion was in male monastery Macheras, near Nicosia, among lush coniferous forests. The serpentine road leads to it so steep that even motion sickness pills did not help some tourists - the height of the mountains and the steepness of the turns were impressive! The monastery got its name thanks to the miraculous icon of the Mother of God Macheratissa, which translates as "knife". This icon is one of the three painted by Luke during the life of Mary, was brought to Cyprus from Constantinople and hidden in the mountains. For a long time, no one knew where it was stored. Only in the 12th century did two monks find her in a cave. To get through the dense thickets, they used a knife found here, and since the knife is in Greek "maheri" - hence the name of the icon and the monastery.
