Sights of Zurich - what to see in one day. Zurich: winter travel ideas Zurich in winter

Mistakenly perceived as a boring financial center, Zurich is a surprisingly busy place with hundreds of leisure options. And if you come here in winter, you will notice the transformation of this Swiss city into a winter wonderland with music, lights and Christmas markets. What to do in Zurich in winter to have fun?

Experience the magic of Christmas on Bahnhofstrasse

All Christmas events in Zurich begin when the Bahnhofstrasse is suddenly lit up with thousands of lights. One of the famous shopping streets in Europe is covered with snow in winter and looks like a fairy tale. Singing trees, garlands, Santa Claus, brightly decorated shop windows - it seems that the festive mood of the whole of Zurich is concentrated precisely on Bahnhofstrasse. The townspeople visit local shops in search of gifts and simply enjoy the beauty of the illumination. By the way, light compositions change almost daily, and the brightest effects literally "flood" the street on Christmas night become the culmination.

Walk through the Old Town

Even if you don't always want to take long walks in winter, the Old Town of Zurich is especially beautiful at this time. Therefore, wearing something warmer, it is worth taking a trip through its cobbled streets. The old quarters store a lot of interesting things, for example, the Schipfe district, where the most colorful and beautiful houses of Zurich, antique shops, and shops with folk goods are located. The next attraction is the majestic city cathedral in the Gothic and Romanesque style, from the bell tower of which everyone can look at winter Zurich. And to warm up, you can go to any cozy cafe in the Old Town for a hot drink.

Try fondue and other winter cuisine

Fondue is the most recognizable Swiss dish that will warm you up and taste especially delicious during the winter months. There are many places in Zurich to sample authentic Swiss fondue, especially since there are plenty of options for every day. Among other dishes popular in winter, in Zurich restaurants it is worth ordering veal with sauce, fresh pastries with hot chocolate, schnitzels, and also excellent homemade sausages. In winter, honey biscuits, or tyrgel, are traditionally on sale, which are cooked with spices. This popular Christmas treat with a holiday pattern was first mentioned in the 15th century.

Visit the Christmas market

Obviously, the list of seasonal activities in winter Zurich would not be complete without the Christmas markets. Switzerland, like the rest of Europe, has no equal in organizing such markets. And for tourists there is no more pleasant entertainment than strolling between the rows of decorated kiosks with some hot drink in hand. In Zurich, on the eve of the most anticipated holiday, about five markets are being opened. But the biggest market is under a roof railway station and opens after November 20. More than 150 stalls sell national sweets, cheeses, souvenirs, unusual Christmas tree decorations. It is believed that it is in the interests of the seller to present the most original products; products with a history are welcomed. Therefore, guests of this market have long been fond of its assortment. In addition to the standard opportunity to buy goods, guests are offered to attend master classes of artisans.

Leave Zurich and go skiing

Alpine skiing and Switzerland are two inextricably linked concepts. And you simply cannot deny yourself this winter entertainment. Flumserberg is the closest resort to Zurich, located 90 km from the city. Its slopes are designed for absolutely all skiers, making Flumserberg accessible for beginners and more confident athletes. And if there is no skiing experience at all, you can sign up for ski school... Here they will teach you how to ski and snowboard. The rest of the time, tourists are entertained by Flumserberg's restaurants serving Italian and Swiss cuisine, including regional wines. Another resort close to Zurich is Engelberg with plenty of snow, freeride opportunities and 28 tracks. Works here snow park for children and various international competitions are held, including ski jumping. By the way, tourists in Engelberg are offered excursions to places associated with the Swiss campaign of Suvorov.

Meet New Year

Zurich is one of those European cities where tourists are eager to celebrate the New Year. People fill the squares and streets, treat themselves to hot chestnuts and traditional cookies, and then wait for the culmination - a grandiose fireworks display over the lake. A festival is also held here, where musicians and vendors entertain guests until the morning. Those who like to celebrate the New Year are more standard and in the warmth, hotels in Zurich offer to order a New Year's dinner. Moreover, many of these establishments are famous for their good panoramas of the city.

Where to go

Zurich, unlike other cities in Switzerland, approaches New Year's celebrations widely and is famous for its lush Christmas markets. One of the most creative has been located in the building of the main railway station for 25 years in a row. Art objects are hung from the ceiling: huge cows, strange female figures of various shapes and colors. Among the numerous wooden chalets with all kinds of edible and inedible souvenirs, a spruce tree rises. The 35-year-old beauty is the most expensive in Switzerland, it is not for nothing that she is dressed up with Swarovski crystals. Sparkling decorations combined with natural light during the day and additional spotlights in the evening create a magical atmosphere.

Following from the station along the main shopping street Bahnhofstrasse across the bridge over the river Limmat and taking a right towards the opera, you exit to the Seckseleutenplatz square, where the city's second Christmas market is located Wienachtsdorf... From November 22nd to December 23rd, right below open air there are about a hundred huts selling roasted chestnuts and mulled wine, brewed exclusively with local wine. People in the square take part in master classes, spin on a merry-go-round, skate.

Where to stay

If you're looking for a true winter wonderland, head to picturesque Hottingen in the suburbs of Zurich. Just two kilometers from the historic center on Dolder Hill, the town of the same name rises above the city. the hotel Dolder Grand, like a fairytale castle covered with snow. After a major renovation, two buildings were added to the main building, all rooms in which are made in a modern style, and the central tower has turned into a fashionable two-storey Maestro suite with two bedrooms, a living room, a library and a terrace for relaxation. All 175 rooms open panoramic view to the city or Lake Zurich.

Zurich has many faces, and this festive season offers you more than just plunge into the purest waters lakes, feeding the swans, but also enjoy walks, shopping and organic restaurants.

Best stay in the luxurious Park Hyatt Zurich, perfect for a romantic weekend (we recommend the Park Corner Suite), family time (when booking, indicate the ages of the children and the hotel will take care of the comfort of the little guests) or a noisy party (check out the new Presidential Suite with its own sauna and fireplace). On the eve of the main night of the year, dine at the Conelli circus Christmas show, which has been creating a festive atmosphere in the city for over 25 years (until January 1). After such a spectacular performance, your children will begin to train stretching and practice acrobatic stunts with even greater zeal - all that remains is to make sure that not a single piece of furniture in the room is damaged. If in the pre-holiday bustle you have not planned where you will spend New Year's Eve, just go down to the ONYX Bar at the hotel. The choice of cocktails will surprise even the sophisticated, the main thing is to have time to choose and make that same cherished wish from the entire list for 2019. At 00:20, colorful fireworks will begin, it is enough to leave the bar to admire.

Lovers of morning jogging can go to the embankment: a breathtaking view of the lake and mountains will accelerate the usual pace. On Tuesdays and Fridays from 6 am on the Bürkliplatz square, which is 5 minutes from the hotel, there is a market where you can buy seasonal flowers for your beloved as a gift for your morning coffee or a glass of champagne. Upon your return, the hotel restaurant serves breakfast for all tastes. The chef also took care of healthy lifestyle lovers: smoothies with superfoods (ideal companions on the morning of January 1), gluten-free pastries or chia seed pudding - everything can be found in the special menu.

A walk through the old town will be perfectly complemented by shopping in the children's store Nook, a cup of aromatic coffee in the cozy Schober pastry shop (the patio is ideal for leisurely gatherings with loved ones even in winter!) And lunch at the Italian Cantinetta Antinori. After a portion of delicious pasta, do not rush to take dessert, but go to wander the streets, one of which is the store with the most delicious chocolate - Max Chocolatier. If you are a vegetarian who loves not only tasty, but also beautiful food, go for lunch at the Hiltl restaurant next to the famous Jelmoli shopping center, where the range and serving of dishes amaze even notorious meat eaters.

After a busy day of shopping (the famous street is two minutes from the hotel), order a gourmet dinner at Parkhuus Restaurant at Park Hyatt Zurich from the special New Year's Eve menu. Dishes made from selected organic ingredients are perfectly complemented by a copy from our own wine collection.

What to do

If your young talents do not like to sit still and the beauty of a European city has not touched their young hearts, be sure to go to Jucker Farm - a place where seasonal vegetables and fruits are harvested in the warm season, and in winter they hold master classes for everyone and introduce winter products. Another main place in winter Zurich is the open historical Dolder Ice Rink. Mulled wine and dynamic music will cheer you up and help whet your appetite.

What to bring

The best souvenir from Switzerland, while another response to sanctions limited their availability at home, will be a selection of local cheeses (excellent selection at Chäs-Vreneli, Tritt Käse Markthalle and Jelmoli). For those who like to bring home vitamins and healthy food products from abroad, we recommend visiting the MÜLLER Reformhaus chain, one of which is located two minutes from the Park Hyatt Zurich. Life hack: here you will find the entire assortment of King Soba organic pasta, so beloved all over the world, which has not yet been delivered to Moscow.

What to plan

If you are one of those who like to think about their trips in advance, then we recommend adding a visit to the Züri Fäscht festival on July 5-7, 2019 to the calendar. Fans from all over the world come every 3 (!) Years to taste local delicacies, dance along the banks of the Limmat River and Lake Zurich to the beat of the musical fireworks. Thinking over the route of a summer walk, arrange a surprise for your loved ones - lunch in the fresh air under the gentle sun in the picturesque places of Zurich. Inform the hotel concierge in advance of your intention to have a picnic - there are plenty of places for this pleasure in the business capital of Switzerland. Lunch will be prepared with seasonal local produce, personally selected by the chef from nearby farms, and a bottle of champagne and lemonade will be carefully packed. For excursions and walks, the cozy and beautiful Villa Patumbah is perfect, if you do not decide to stay in a wonderful Chinese garden, which is located by the lake near the Villa. After a leisurely meal, rent bicycles and ride along the boardwalk in the bright sunshine. A must stop is Gelati am See. We strongly recommend that you take care of a scoop of ice cream for yourself: it is naive to believe that the children will share with you the most delicious ice cream in the area.

Well, let's continue walking in winter Switzerland)))

We spent only a few hours in Zurich on December 4th. Therefore, a post from the category "What can be seen in one day")))

Seven hours for a transfer is a lot. And more or less regularly we use such transfers with benefit, going out into the city. True, more often there is more time, so I resisted a little - I didn't want to explore Zurich at a brisk gallop. But on the plus side, the fact that the airport is only a fifteen-minute drive from the center worked. Trains (in our case commuter trains) they walk remarkably regularly, downright with the accuracy of Swiss watches :-)) Therefore, at 11 in the morning we already went out to the square in front of Zurich Central Station with a green Alfred Escher , founder of Swiss railways.

I mentioned that the main bazaar happened to be right at the station. But we did not see it, because our train arrived at the lower platform (respectively, there are upper ones))), so we immediately found ourselves in underground passages, very similar to our Moscow ones, when Sobyanin had not yet overcome the "underground" trade. And the shops in the bulk are not the cheapest)))

And this is just such a fountain)))

Most tourists who come to Zurich - especially by train - will go directly to Bahnhofstrasse (just Zheleznodorozhnaya street)))), but at its 1.5 km it has the most expensive shops and five-star hotels. Decent people shop here.

But I am so far from shopping: ((that my respectability extended only to pretzels bought on the "golden" street of Zurich. I just wanted to eat))) And I love pretzels!

So we with Bahnhofstrasse immediately turned into the Old Town.

Altstadt is a must in every European city... A kind of "sacred cow", where nothing can be altered, where crowds of tourists roam from morning until morning, where living is expensive and inconvenient, but terribly prestigious ...

I don't know if I would like everyone passing by to stare at my pretty little balcony))))

But it's nice to live in a house with a store)))

This part of the Old Town is traditionally pedestrianized, only residents visit.

Many streets are decorated with illumination. It was a pity that it was impossible to stay until the evening. Surely it looks beautiful. But even without this, small squares with diverging streets are good. In different places there are fountains with drinking water, different statues and bright flower beds.

I was still tormented by thoughts of whether to drink water from a gushing stream. I mean, is it really drinking. Exactly. The local people drank. Then we applied too)))

The natural border of the pedestrian zone is the Limmat River.

There are many beautiful and significant buildings along its banks. For example, the town hall. The building is actually part of the bridge, you can swim under it.

They write that if the outside of the town hall is a restrained baroque, then inside the decoration is very magnificent and looks more like a palace.

To the right of the pink building is visible St. Peter's Church .

From the net: Temple of the IX century with an ancient tower clock with a 4-meter minute hand and a dial diameter of about 9 meters.

Left - green tower Fraumünster.

From the net: According to the surviving documents, the temple was erected in the 9th century under Louis II for his daughter Hildegarda, who preferred monasticism to secular life. For a long time, there was a nunnery at the church, where representatives of noble families were tonsured.

Until the middle of the 20th century, the Fraumünster Church fell into decay, but in the 60s. has been restored. The artist M. Chagall worked on the stained-glass windows.

Monument next to the church Hans Waldman , the mayor of Zurich and a military leader already in the 15th century ...

And one more angle on Fraumünster- from another dominant of the city Grossmünster.

But the "pink building" itself should not be ignored)))) The name speaks for itself - "Storhen", that is. "Stork". And they say that this hotel has stood at this place for 650 years)).

Two equal-sized towers are visible from many points of the city - this is Grossmünster.

From the net: The temple was built in a gloomy Romanesque style. It is believed that its history began in the 9th century and is associated with the name of the Emperor Charlemagne. His horse fell to his knees in front of the grave of the Christian martyrs Felix and Regula, who fled from the persecution of the Romans. The brother and sister were executed and buried on the hill, where the Grossmünster was later erected.

We entered this church. You cannot take pictures inside. Anyway, the interior is quite austere. Much has been greatly refurbished, from which the feeling of antiquity is lost.

For example, such gates are very modern and were clearly installed recently)).

From Grossmünster we went deeper into another part of the Old City, beyond Limmat.

This side is perhaps less old. But the same fountains in small squares, pretty houses, small shops ...

An unrealistic number of second-hand bookstores per capita, probably not cheap. But they are so cute - I love old books ...

Dog packets are ubiquitous here. But people are not forgotten either - dry closets are also ubiquitous. Probably, they are saving themselves from tourists wandering in all corners. And rightly so.

This is an even less historical part of the city, although it also looks pretty)))))

In search of where to eat, we went back and ended up on the shore Lake Zurich .

Well, really, then Zurich should be))).

The day was so different. That is gray-gloomy, even with rain, then the bright sun and blue sky))) And +12, which is gratifying for a Russian in December :-))

You can ride a boat on the lake. And there will be a case, let's ride.

For some reason, on the embankment of Lake Zurich, I did not shoot at all. I just looked at the daily life of the Zurich people. Many runners, walking with children, playing with dogs. Even on lawns. And nowhere are there any prohibitions in the style of the house manager from the "Diamond Hand")))

I watched the seagulls ... But not now about the birds - and there are so many.

Only the "green boy" with someone's head remained in the photo. Think David? Why was the head cut off?

AND Opera theatre... I liked it very much!

A very nice, light building. True, along the perimeter, modern sculptures, which are not unambiguous for me, are introduced (as it is fashionable now). Like an unidentified boy. On the other hand, it is necessary for today's creators to leave a trace somewhere ...

A river flows out of Lake Zurich Limmat... Which is good in itself.

It is also very pleasant to walk along its embankments ...

Left - building Swiss National Museum ... It is located just behind the central station. And the plans were to visit him due to proximity.

But the weather contributed to the walk))) To which I am very glad. Although reviews of the museum are good, it is large and would take a long time. And we could not go around so much and see. So next time too))

There is a small square behind the museum. Again, people are walking. And we walked. The sound of falling water was heard all the time. I kept wondering, a waterfall or something, or a dam ...

It turned out, indeed, a dam)) It flows down a quiet and calm Limmat ...

And on the other side of the arrow, flowing from the mountains seethes Ziel.

And also, Limmat and Zil mix their colorful waters.

We calculated the time well. We got on the right train. The people wrote in the reviews: be careful, otherwise, having got on the wrong train, you may end up in Lausanne, or even Paris. All right. We climbed up to the second floor in the train and watched the sunset over Zurich. There was no longer a nice picture of old times. There were many glass-walled office buildings and thousands of people could be seen sitting in these large "hives" ...

Zurich - The largest city Switzerland, which has a history of about 11 centuries. It is located in a picturesque landscape on the shores of Lake Zurich, surrounded by wooded Alpine mountains...
