About the book "The Shining" by Stephen King

Stephen King ... There is a reason why he is called the King of Horrors. Reading his works, you feel how the sticky tentacles of fear creep into your soul quietly and slowly, how a chilling cold of horror seizes your heart. The author draws the reader into his strange world so strongly that the line between fiction and reality is completely erased from him. After all, King gets into the subconscious of his main characters so much that you involuntarily wonder how you would act in his place, and are you not one of the main characters? The book "The Shining" is a real masterpiece in modern literature, a mixture of mysticism, psychology, masterfully twisted intrigue and, finally, releasing from tension, denouement.

Millions of people around the world have recognized the writer as a genius after the publication of this book. However, few people know that some of the events described in this novel have some real background. Thus, a gloomy and mysterious hotel was decommissioned from the Stanley Hotel, which stands on a mountain pass in Colorado. And just like in The Shining, the hotel was cut off from the outside world in winter when King and his family were visiting. The hedgerow, created in the form of animal figures, blood-colored carpet paths, thick doors that practically did not penetrate extraneous sounds, a large banquet hall, even room 217 ... all this was later included in a terrible, gothic ghost story.

The scene when the main character, a little boy Danny with the gift of clairvoyance, ran through the corridors of an empty, gloomy hotel and was chased by a fire hose - it was a dream that the writer had in a new place. And so the brilliant idea of creating the book "The Shining", the mysterious history of the evil Hotel, was born - a terrible creature living its own life, a spirit of evil, easily destroying human lives.

It was in this place, smoking a cigarette and looking out the window at the rocky mountains covered with snow, that the author captured in his memory the main storyline of the story of an unusual place where, parallel to ordinary reality, another exists, where terrible ghosts tell their terrible tales about a long time ago. forgotten murders, about his past life. And these creatures from the other world will put pressure on the psyche of one of the main characters, because the bloodthirsty Hotel is not enough old murders ... he wants to get more and more victims in his insatiable mouth. Now his new goal is Danny, a boy who shines, able to see events from the past, divine the future and keep in touch with the same clairvoyants like himself. This mystical hotel will become even stronger, even more alive if it manages to get such a "shining" into its snares ... The fight of darkness with light, good and evil separately and in each person ... King will show us in an atmospheric, frightening story called "Shine".

The Shining is a well-known psychological thriller by Stephen King. He was prompted to write the novel by a nightmare he saw at the hotel. In a dream, his son was trying to escape from something supernatural. The writer wanted to get rid of his negative emotions directed at children with the help of the novel.

Jack, who was a former teacher and now decided to start a career as a writer, takes a job as a hotel security guard for the winter. Together with him, his family goes there: wife Wendy and son Denny. The boy is only five years old, but he has the gift of clairvoyance. Jack has a drinking problem, and he becomes aggressive and may use force. He accidentally broke his son's arm and beat a student. He decided that working in a quiet, remote place would help him come to his senses and work on a play. He was not scared away by the fact that it was almost impossible to get to the hotel in winter, and that there were bad rumors about him about terrible events, and the former security guard killed all members of his family.

When the servants leave the hotel for the winter, the boy meets the chef, who informs him that he sees his glow. This means that the boy has the ability to see what has happened or will happen. The chef says it could be bad for him and warns him not to go to room 217. After the departure of the servants, only the three of them remain in the large building. Strange things begin to happen: objects move, bushes come to life. Danny can see the real face of the hotel with all its ghosts. Entering room 217, he sees a woman who previously drowned in the bathroom and now attacked him.

Jack finds a hotel album, and the hotel subsequently takes over his mind, and Jack tries to attack his family. It cuts off the only source of communication with the outside world. A mother with a child has to escape, hiding in a huge empty hotel, wanting to take the boy for herself in order to become stronger. And the ghosts are becoming more apparent.

Throughout the story, the novel keeps you in suspense. In a few minutes, reading becomes really scary. For thrill-seekers, this novel will be a real find.

Description of the book "The Shining" by Stephen King

You can talk endlessly about Stephen King. It is he who is considered a master and classic of horror. His books are mystical stories with very unexpected endings. Such literature is scary to read before bedtime.

The Shining is rather a bit of an exception to Stephen King's usual rules. Of course, it has mysticism and sentimental events, but this is more a psychological thriller than a horror. This is a story about the horrors of the human soul.

The plot immediately makes the heart beat faster, and goose bumps begin to march through the body. A luxury hotel located far from settlements is closed for the winter, but there must be someone there to look after the building. It is proposed to do this to one writer, who goes there with his family, wife and son.

As is often the case, writers love solitude and silence so that thoughts and fantasies can fully take over the situation, helping to create interesting books. So the main character thought that it would be very easy for him to write in peace and quiet, especially since there are more than enough places for solitude in the hotel. But it was the peace and quiet that played a cruel joke with the main character ...

The hotel has a dark history of its own. People died here under mysterious circumstances, and ghosts still wander the corridors of the building, frightening residents and staff. Like the hotel, the protagonist has his own skeletons in the closet.

This man has an unbalanced character, of which his wife and son have been convinced more than once. This character is quite interesting, and it is a pleasure to watch him. Stephen King, like a real psychologist, described the disorder that the man had, but in his own colors.

The hero's wife is also very interesting. She is kind and sweet, but at the same time forgives everything to her husband, forgetting about the child. Love, of course, is a strong feeling, but it should not harm people, especially children.

The strangest character in the book, Stephen King made a boy who seems to see and understand much more than any other person. In addition, his psyche was influenced by the attitude of his father and the indifference of his mother.

The boy has a disease - he falls into a stupor, and at the hotel he began to repeat one incomprehensible word. This makes the atmosphere even more frightening. At the same time, he, like his father, sees ghosts. But are they really ghosts or is it a simple fantasy motivated by a sick psyche? The boy and his father are on an equal footing, but one of them is a real madman.

I like the book because, along with the main character, you start to go crazy yourself, and without even noticing it. Only Stephen King can do it. Events take place in the hotel that make a man show all his black nature, turning it inside out, and the love of drinking has reinforced and aggravated everything.

Thanks to the book, you can see how two-faced people are, and how selfish we sometimes are. And this manifests itself precisely when we are left alone with ourselves, when our thoughts begin to eat us up, forcing us to believe in something that does not exist in reality.

Stephen King has created a unique book that should be read by everyone who is not afraid of mysticism and unexpected turns of events. The Shining helps to understand that you are not really in control of this world, and the world can easily turn you into a monster. The work will accurately reveal all your fears, and you will no longer be able to live in peace.

The book can be understood in different ways. In fact, there are only three main characters in it, but they are all so different and unusual that sometimes you get confused which of them is more insane and terrible. For some, the book will seem incomprehensible, for others it will be a good horror, and still others will be able to see something more in it that will help open the veil over human psychology.

We recommend Stephen King's book to everyone. It is impossible not to love this writer. He himself, having a difficult fate, writes about the problems that are close to him. It shows what humanity really is, if you tear off the mask in silence.

Stephen KING

Dedicated to Joe Hill King Who Shines Everything.

The editor of this book of mine, like the two previous ones, was Mr. William J. Thompson, a wise and sane man. His contribution to this book is great, and I thank him for that.

Colorado has some of the finest resort hotels in the world, but the hotel described on these pages does not imply any of them. The Overlook and the people associated with it exist exclusively in the imagination of the author.

And in this room ... there was a giant ebony clock. Their heavy pendulum with a monotonous muffled sound swayed from side to side and when ... the clock came to strike, a distinct and loud sound, heartfelt and surprisingly musical, escaped from their copper lungs, so unusual in strength and timbre that the orchestra members were forced to ... stop to listen to him. Then the waltzing couples involuntarily stopped spinning, the band of merry fellows froze for a moment in embarrassment and, while the clock was beating off the blows, the faces of even the most dissolute ones turned pale, and those who were older and more judicious, involuntarily passed their hand across their foreheads, driving away some vague thought. But then the striking of the clock ceased, and at once cheerful laughter filled the chambers; the musicians exchanged glances with a smile, as if laughing at their absurd fright, and each quietly swore to the other that next time he would not succumb to embarrassment at these sounds. And when they ran for ten minutes ... and the clock began to strike again, the same confusion set in and the audience was seized with confusion and anxiety.

And yet it was a splendid and cheerful celebration ...

"PRELIMINARY QUESTIONS"

1. TALK ABOUT WORK

Jack Torrance thought BATCH SON OF BITCH.

Ullman was five feet five, and as he moved, he found that fussy, annoying speed that is unique to short plump women. The neat parting divided the hair, and the dark suit was strict, but inspired confidence. Here is a person to whom you can come with your problems, said the suit to a money client. To the staff, he said more abruptly and rudely: "Well, you, it is better to let everything be the way." There was a red carnation in the buttonhole, perhaps so that none of the passers-by mistakenly mistook Stuart Ullman for the local undertaker.

Listening to what Ullman had to say, Jack decided for himself that under the circumstances, he probably would not have sympathized with any person on his side of the table.

Ullman asked a question that Jack ignored. It didn't work out well. Ullman was the type of person who would enter such blunders into a mental Rolodex for later consideration.

- Sorry?

“I’m asking if your wife fully understands what responsibilities you will take on here. And then, of course, your son.

Ullman's gaze slid down to the statement in front of him.

- Daniel. Does that thought scare your wife in the least?

- Wendy is an extraordinary woman.

- And your son is also extraordinary?

- I think we like to think so. For a five-year-old, he is completely independent.

No answering smile from Ullman. He slipped Jack's statement back into the folder. The folder went into the drawer. The tabletop was now completely bare, except for a paperweight, a telephone, a Tensor lamp, and a case with indentations for incoming and outgoing papers. Both cells were also empty.

Ullman got up and walked to the corner to a rack of shelves.

“Please go around the table, Mr. Torrance. Let's see the floor plans.

He returned with five large sheets and laid them out on a shiny, even walnut countertop. Jack stepped over his shoulders, realizing how strong Ullman smelled of cologne. ALL MY PEOPLE Smell "ENGLISH SKIN" OR DO NOT Smell AT ALL - all of a sudden it occurred to him for no reason at all, and Jack had to bite his tongue to stifle a sharp, unpleasant laugh. Behind the wall, the Overlook Hotel's kitchen, calming after lunch, was rustling faintly.

“The last floor,” Ullman said abruptly, “the attic. Solid rubbish, nothing more. Since the Second World War "Overlook" changed owners several times and, it seems, every next manager sent everything unnecessary to the attic. I want venom to be scattered all over the place and rat traps set up. The maids on the fourth floor said they heard rustles. I didn’t believe for a minute, but there should not even be a chance in a thousand that at least one single rat would start in the Overlook.

Jack, who suspected there was a rat or two in every hotel in the world, held his tongue.

- Of course, under no circumstances should a child be allowed to go up to the attic.

“Of course,” Jack said, flashing his broadest advertising smile again. Well, this filthy bureaucrat really thinks that he will let his son hang out in the attic, which is full of rat traps, various junk and God knows what else?

Ullman slid the plan of the attic aside and tucked it under the bottom of the pile.

“The Overlook has a hundred and ten numbers,” he said in the tone of a schoolteacher. “Thirty rooms, all suites, here on the fourth floor. Ten - in the west wing (including the Presidential one), ten - in the central part, and ten more in the east wing. The views from all windows are magnificent.

But he remained silent. He needed a job.

Ullman tucked the fourth floor under the bottom of the pile and they studied the third.

“Forty rooms,” Ullman said, “thirty doubles and ten singles. And on the second floor there are ten of both. Plus, there are three linen and storage rooms on each floor: on the third floor - at the very end of the east wing of the hotel, on the second - at the very end of the west wing. Questions?

Jack shook his head. Ullman swept away the third and second floors.

- Now - the first floor. Right here, in the center, is the reception desk. Behind her are the offices. The lobby extends eighty feet from the reception desk. Here, in the west wing, is the Overlook dining room and the Colorado bar. Banquet and ballroom are in the east wing. Questions?

“Only about the basement,” Jack said. “For the winter caretaker, this is the most important floor. Where, so to speak, the action unfolds.

“Watson will show you all this. The basement plan is on the boiler room wall. - He frowned imposingly, perhaps wanting to show that such low aspects of the Overlook's life as the boiler and the water supply were not his, the manager's, concern. - Maybe it would be nice to put some rat traps there. Wait a minute ...

He took a notepad from his inner jacket pocket and scribbled a note (each sheet read FROM STUART ULLMAN'S DESK in clear handwriting in black ink) and tore it off, put it in the outgoing bin. The notebook disappeared into Ullman's jacket pocket again, as if completing a magic trick: here it is, Jackie, baby, but it is not. Yeah, the guy is really a big shot.

They took their former places, Ullman at the table, Jack in front of him; asking and answering questions; petitioner and unyielding master. Ullman folded his neat palms on a paperweight and stared at Jack, a balding, short man in a banker's suit and tie in a calm gray tone. A stud in the buttonhole was balanced by a small badge on the other lapel. There was only one word written in golden letters: EMPLOYEE.

- Mr. Torrance, I will be very frank with you. Elbert Shockley is an influential man who has invested heavily in Overlook, which has made a profit this season for the first time in its history. In addition, Mr. Shockley sits on the Board of Directors, but in hotels he understands little, and he already admits it before anyone else. However, about the caretaker, he made it quite clear what he wanted. And he wants us to hire you. I will do so. But if I were given freedom of action in this matter, I would prefer not to take you.

Jack clenched his sweaty hands in his lap, wringing his fingers. CHICKEN BITCH SON, CHICKEN BITCH ...

“I don’t think you are very interested in my opinion, Mr. Torrance. I have a SON, a BITCH BITCH ...

- ... it doesn't matter. Of course, your feelings towards me do not in any way affect my personal belief that you are not fit for the job. You might have noticed that during the season, and it lasts from May 15 to September 30, Overlook constantly employs one hundred and ten people - one person for each room. It is unlikely that many people like me, and I suspect that some consider me a fair bastard. If so, they were not wrong. To run a hotel the way it deserves, you have to be a pretty bastard.
