On this moment there are 3 different piers here. Carnival has invested about $20 million in expanding the local port.

Punta Langosta is located right in the city's business district. After leaving the ship and walking along the pier towards the city, you will find yourself in a passage leading to shopping mall. And this is the very heart of downtown Cozumel.

International Pier is about a 10-minute drive south of the city (you can walk this distance in half an hour along the coast, but if it's hot outside, it's best to get in the car). If the lines of people waiting to take taxis are too long, leave the pier and go outside. Turn left at the port entrance and head towards El Cid La Ceiba. There, cars returning from the city try to get to the pier, and therefore drivers will be happy to board a passenger without wasting time waiting in a long line. The trip costs about 7 dollars.

The third pier - Puerto Maya - is located very close to the International Pier, and the recommendations for them will be the same.

Finally, if there are too many ships in the port, some of them anchor outside and use tenders to ferry passengers to the Punta Langosta pier.

Most of the Carnival cruise line ships dock in Puerto Maya.

What to see in Cozumel on a cruise

Most tourists come to Cozumel to take a look at its underwater world. Although there are many beach clubs offering snorkeling, the main attractions are the reefs located far from the shore. There are many diving centers here ready to take you there. The main city and diving organizations are located on the western side of the island. But if you rent a Beetle or a scooter, then you should visit its eastern part. It is mostly underdeveloped, but there is beautiful beaches, high waves and exposed rocks over the ocean. During strong waves you will be able to see several small lava craters.

Restaurants on the beach are located literally at every step. List of beaches.

Routes, excursions, transport in the port of Cozumel

Rent a car from any of the well-known companies. You can find them near the piers for cruise ships. Since there is only one main road, you simply cannot get lost.

Expect to pay $10 for the ride from the pier to San Miguel. The demands of most taxi drivers are much higher, so if you doubt their honesty, ask to see the tariff schedule that each of them should have.

San Miguel is very walkable and you can easily explore the promenade and area retail space on foot. The main entertainment here are the small cafes and shops that line the streets and on main square.

What to see around Cozumel

Chankanaab National Park, located south of the city (about 9 km), is open daily from 7 am to 5 pm. It consists of a beach, restaurant, bar, changing rooms, walking paths and a lagoon, home to a large population of iguanas. Activities include snorkeling and diving, swimming with dolphins, and scuba diving. On the park's website you can find a $2 discount coupon and available activities. Admission for adults averages $22 per person.

Cozumel Pearl Farm, the only working pearl farm, is located in a protected natural area, where everything remains in its original form. You can only get there by boat, because the farm is surrounded on one side by a lagoon with mangroves, and on the other by the delightful turquoise waters of the Caribbean Gulf.

The shops

In San Miguel most of Tourist-oriented shopping outlets are located around the main square and are easily accessible on foot.

Currency

The Mexican currency is the peso (MXN). The symbol used to denote it coincides with the American dollar icon, and therefore they are easy to confuse. Prices in dollars - in tourist areas— are marked US$ or S with two strokes. For one American dollar they give about 17 pesos.

Credit cards in Cozumel are not as widespread as in Europe or the USA. Some companies charge an additional fee of 5% of the transaction amount for such transactions. Cash rules here.

Languages and communication

The main language in Mexico is Spanish. English is spoken in cities bordering the United States, as well as in tourist areas.

Opening hours and holidays

Traditionally, department stores are open from 9:00 to 13:00 (except Sundays) and from 17:00 to 21:00. But retail outlets located near the pier are often open all day, especially in high season. Most shops are closed on Sunday mornings.

The sunny voyage continues - we are in Cozumel

Today is November 12, Saturday, and we are moored at the port of the Mexican island of Cozumel - this very big Island Mexico (16 km wide and 45 km long) has been a tourism hub for thousands of years.

The island is the top of a seamount that was formed as a result of tectonic movements in the earth's crust millions of years ago. One part of the mountain, after a drop in the level of the world's oceans, appeared on the surface, the other - hidden under water - was overgrown with colored corals that form picturesque vertical columns.

I looked at the business card of Cozumel and already want to go there in real life:

In Cozumel, the ruins of IxChel, the ancient goddess of fertility, have been preserved. Even the ancient Mayans made a pilgrimage to this temple at least once in their lives. And the temple still attracts many tourists. This is well illustrated by our traditional video greeting:

Much of Cozumel is in its original state. Tropical jungles and swampy lagoons serve as a haven for many animals and birds. Famous national park Chankanaab, the Punta Celarain Ecological Reserve, and the Colombia Lagoon, home to endemic animal species, make Cozumel a recognized eco-tourism destination.

In 1961, during an expedition to the island, the famous explorer of the world's oceans Jacques Cousteau was literally amazed by the beauty underwater world this place. Since then, Cozumel has transformed from sleepy fishing island to one of the most popular diving resorts, whose coastal waters have been recognized as an underwater reserve.

In the coastal waters of Cozumel there are underwater caves that form a complex system and bizarre reefs that descend to varying depths, making it suitable for diving by both professionals and beginners. Near the island you can find parrot fish, moray eels, starfish, tropical fish: from tiny to huge, reaching human height.

The only city on the island is San Miguel, but there are many hotels on the coast that specialize in welcoming divers.

Colorful underwater reef life near Cozumel.

Cozumel is a paradise on an island 20 km off the coast of Yucatan, which is famous for its beautiful coral reefs and exclusively clear water. The famous explorer of the depths, Jacques Cousteau himself, considered this place the best in the world for diving. Situated on the world's second largest barrier reef, Palancar, Cozumel attracts divers from all over the world:
