The construction company of Karl Ludwik, which from the middle of the 19th century was building a road in Eastern Galicia from Lvov to the eastern border of the Austro-Hungarian Monarchy, faced great difficulties caused by the terrain features in the section from Zolochiv to Ternopil. Rumors were spread that the railway route would bypass Ternopil, and a station with a train station would be built in the village. White.

In 1864, the committee under the leadership of L. Sapieha resumed its activities. On September 26, 1864, the former chief engineer of the railway under the project of the Karl Ludwik Society, Vladislav Zapolovich, received permission from the government to carry out preparatory work for laying a railway from Lviv through Zolochev-Ternopil to the Dniester with a branch in Brody. The Ternopil Railway added to the railway traffic of the monarchy the fertile part of Galicia, Ternopil district, the northeastern part of Berezhansky, northern Chertkovsky and eastern Zolochevsky districts.

Also, thanks to the construction of the Lviv - Zolochev - Ternopil line with a branch to Brody, the Austrian side received a guaranteed and easy way of transport connection to any point on Russian border. The construction of the line to Brody and the line to Ternopil was regarded as urgent in Lvov.

In 1865, after a thorough study of the area and consideration of several projects, the railway was supposed to pass through Zolochev, Zborov, Ozernaya and Glibochok. But only on May 15, 1867, the Austrian government issued a concession to the Karl Ludwik railway company for the Lviv-Brody line with a branch to Ternopil.

It was assumed that the railway line would be built through the city. The station with the railway palace was built in the city center, and not on the outskirts, which at one time greatly worried the city community.

The first building arose in 1870 with its opening on December 28, 1870 railway track Zolochiv - Ternopil. In the fall of 1903, construction began on a new station building. In the spring of 1905, the construction of the right wing was completed, and in August 1906 the new station was put into operation. It was destroyed during the First World War and subsequently rebuilt. In 1944 it was destroyed again, after which it was restored in 1952 in a modified form.

The last finishing work was carried out in 1999-2000.

The Epiphany Monastery was founded in 1636 by the cornet D. Malinovsky and L. Drevinsky. Now it is located in the city of Kremenets, in a building that was built by S. Pototsky in 1760.

The first school, hospital and printing house were opened in the Epiphany Monastery. The current church building combines two architectural styles: Baroque and pseudo-Russian. It has a three-tier bell tower over the Holy Gates, a church and cells. The building is single-method, its facades are decorated with pilasters of the Tuscan order. The cells are adjacent to the façade of the church. Two risalits form a court d'honneur. One risalit once served as a refectory, and the second was the abbot’s chambers.

In 1959 the monastery was closed. In 1990 it was opened as a women's one. The temple houses an icon of the Mother of God, an icon of St. Barbara with a particle of relics, and an icon of St. Panteleimon with a particle of relics that emits heat.

Zbarazh Castle

In 1626-1631, not far from the center of the city of Zbarazh, Zbarazh Castle was founded. It was designed by van Peen, a Flemish architect inspired by Scamozzi's fortification project published in Italy.

The construction was carried out by the brothers Christopher and Yuri Zbarazhsky. In 1636, the Vishnevetsky princes became the owners of the castle. They strengthened the defenses with casemated ramparts with 12-meter scarps, bastions, a single-tier tower and a moat that surrounds the entire castle.

The width of the castle is 23 meters, it is square in plan. There are pentagonal bastions at the four corners. Each bastion had tunnels that connected them to the castle courtyard and casemates.

Zbarazh Castle was one of the most powerful buildings; it was armed with 50 cannons. According to the initial project, it was supposed to build 4-corner artillery towers connected by fortress walls. The role of artillery increased, and the top of the towers was demolished to the level of curtains; inside, along the entire perimeter of the courtyard, one-story casemates were added to the fortress walls.

In the courtyard there is a two-story rectangular palace in the Renaissance style. Above the main entrance there is a balcony on stone consoles. The facades of the casemates are also made in the Renaissance style. In 1649, this building played a key role during the Cossack uprising under the leadership of B. Khmelnytsky. After the siege, the Treaty of Zborov was signed. Under the walls of the castle, Ivan Bohun was seriously wounded. All events were reflected in the novel “with fire and sword.”

The Carmelite Monastery is located in the city of Terebovlya, Ukraine. The monastery was built on the banks of the Gniezna River in 1617, first from wood, after 1635 - from stone. In 1635-1639, the main building of the monastery was erected - a stone church in the Renaissance style. In the 17th century, the monastery was repeatedly destroyed. The monastery complex was finally formed by the middle of the 18th century: the monastery was surrounded by a wall with four corner towers and loopholes. Ternopil Castle

Ternopil Castle was founded in 1540 by the great crown hetman J. Tarnovsky on the site of the ancient Russian settlement of Sopilche (Topilche) to defend the Polish borders from the Tatars. In the 17th century the great crown chancellor T. Zamoyski significantly expanded the fortifications, but in subsequent years they were repeatedly destroyed. In particular, the castle was almost completely dismantled by the Turks after the capture of the city in 1672. At the beginning of the 19th century. Count F. Koritovsky built a palace in its place, for which the remaining fortifications, towers and gates were demolished, and the building was surrounded by an ordinary fence. Some castle elements have been preserved. During World War I, the palace was burned and lay in ruins for a long time. Restored in 1951, it housed exhibition halls and an educational and sports center. From the street the building looks unprepossessing, but from the side of the lake its fortification character is clearly visible.

Ternopil - a city of unexpected discoveries

Ukrainian Ternopil has many pleasant discoveries in store for the traveler. The city's attractions are not only numerous but also interesting museums, green parks and original restaurants.

Ternopil was founded in the mid-16th century by the Polish magnate Jan Tarnowski. During its history, it has been part of many states: Poland, Russian Empire, Austria-Hungary, Western Ukrainian People's Republic, Soviet Union. Ternopil residents consider Saint Tekla the patron saint of their city.

Ternopil is located on the Podolsk Upland, in a zone of deciduous forests. The area around the city is highly dissected and hilly. The elevation differences within Ternopil reach 75 meters. The Seret River (the left tributary of the Dniester) flows through the city.

All travelers and guests of the city are surprised by the variety and beauty of the numerous attractions of Ternopil. Photos and descriptions of the most important monuments and tourist sites in the city can be found in the following sections of the article.

Castle and lake

The main place for relaxation and leisurely walks in the city is the so-called Ternopil Stave. This is the largest urban area in Europe - about 300 hectares. It is believed that it was created back in 1540 by Jan Tarnowski.

In 2015, the reconstruction of the embankment along the lake was completed. Here today you can see bike paths, sculptures and green spaces. A small boat for tourists and vacationers plies tirelessly on the lake. There is also an “Island of Lovers” on the lake, which can be reached via a specially equipped bridge.

The massive yellow castle building, erected in 1540, looms over the embankment. Actually, the construction of the city itself began with it. It was intended to defend the southeastern Polish borders from periodic raids by the Tatars and Turks. The latter managed to storm the fortress in 1675. Then they destroyed most of the castle fortifications.

In 1944, Ternopil Castle was destroyed by Red Army troops in the battle with the Nazis. After the war, only one of the buildings of the defensive complex survived. It was restored in the 50s. Today it houses a sports school and a restaurant.

Monuments of sacred architecture

The sights of Ternopil include numerous architectural monuments, including five monuments of national significance. Among them are three temple buildings: the Dominican Church, the Church of the Nativity and the Supernal Church.

The Dominican church with cells is a unique monument of sacred architecture of the 18th century. It was built in the Baroque style according to the design of the architect August Moszynski. During the hostilities of 1944, the structure was badly damaged. The church was restored in 1957, and in 2015 a clock was installed on its tower - an exact copy of the pre-war one.

Under the Dominican Church there are ancient underground passages, lined with stone and brick. Historians claim that they lead to the castle on the lake and other locations in the city.

Most old temple Ternopil - Church of the Nativity of Christ, which is located on Russkaya Street. It was built back in 1608 from stone for 1916 zlotys. Fortunately, the building was not damaged during the Second World War.

If you walk west along Russkaya Street, you can come to another ancient Ternopil temple. This is the so-called Nadstavnaya Church (it is indeed located directly above the city camp). The temple was built at the end of the 16th century in the Renaissance style. In the 50s, the Soviet government planned to demolish the Nadstavnaya Church and build the Moscow Hotel in its place. Unique monument The only thing that saved the architecture was that there simply wasn’t enough space here to build a giant hotel.

Unfortunately, not all architectural sights of Ternopil have survived to this day. Thus, the real decoration of the central part of the city was the Gothic Church of the Mother of God of Perpetual Help. In 1954, it was blown up, and a Central Department Store was built on the liberated site. A similar fate befell the old city synagogue, the building of which was destroyed in 1944.

Monuments of civil architecture

The sights of Ternopil are not only ancient churches and cathedrals. There are also many monuments of civil architecture preserved here. Their total number is 189. Almost all of them date from the second half of the 19th - early 20th centuries.

Kremenets is a city where time stops

It is this formulation that suits this town in the north of the Ternopil region very well. Time has truly stood still here, you can feel it right away.

Kremenets is surrounded on almost all sides by high hills (Kremenets Mountains). At the top of one of them there are remains old fortress, known since the 13th century. It was here that the Lithuanian prince Vytautas once received foreign ambassadors. In 1648, the castle was destroyed by the Cossacks; today only picturesque ruins remain.

From Castle Hill there is a wonderful view of the old part of Kremenets. The ensemble of the Jesuit College is visible from here - the most beautiful and grandiose building of the city in the Baroque style. The Collegium was built at the beginning of the 18th century at the expense of Prince Vishnevetsky. Later, an elite lyceum was opened in this building.

Zalishchiki - a postcard city

From the north we move to the south of the Ternopil region, to Zalishchyky. Once it was a very popular Polish resort, today it is a small provincial town of Podolia.

Today there are several preserved in the city architectural monuments: Brunitsky Palace, old synagogue, Church of St. Stanislav and others. However, the main attraction of this settlement lies in its unique geographical location. Thus, Zalishchiki is located in a steep meander of the Dniester River. From a bird's eye view it seems as if the city is on an island. By the way, it is in Zalishchiki that photographers take one of the most popular panoramic shots in all of Ukraine.

Nyrkov - another pearl of the Ternopil region

In the southern part of the Ternopil region there is another interesting place for tourists - the village of Nyrkov. It is located on the site of Chervonogorod, a village that no longer exists modern maps. The name comes from the rich color of the soil in the valley of the local river Dzhurin. Here, by the way, it forms the largest waterfall in lowland Ukraine with a height of 17 meters.

Near the waterfall you can see the remains of the Poninsky Palace - two Gothic towers. The village also houses the Church of the Holy Intercession (1714), as well as an ancient cemetery with a dilapidated crypt of the Poninsky family.
