Spanish Post is the national postal operator of Spain, providing postal services both within the country and abroad. In addition to standard delivery, we also provide courier delivery. As a member of the EMS cooperative, Spanish Post is the designated operator for the delivery of EMS items.

International postal regulations strictly prohibit the sending of drugs, psychotropic or explosive, flammable or other dangerous substances and objects by post. The Correos website contains complete postage rules, including restrictions on dimensions, weight and contents of mail.

Types of Correos track numbers

EMS items and parcels are always assigned by Spanish Post a tracking number. Small packages may be unregistered and may not be tracked.

A unified track number format for registered international mail has been approved. The Correos track number has the same appearance and consists of 13 characters:

  • RT123456785ES – small package from Spain;
  • CA123456785ES – parcel from Spain;
  • EE123456785ES – express delivery from Spain.

The 13-digit track number is encrypted: the type of item is in the first letter, the uniqueness of the number is confirmed by the second letter and all numbers. The last two letters indicate the country of the postal service, for example RU is Russian Post, US is US Post, etc.

Correos Postal Tracking

Tracking international postal shipments from Spain can be a very useful tool for monitoring the movement of packages. Postal statuses will indicate at what stage the shipment is at.

Conventionally, international Correos shipments go through the following main stages:

  • Reception of the shipment at the Correos office;
  • Processing and distribution at the sorting center;
  • The parcel arrives at the place of international postal exchange, where it is prepared for further movement;
  • Customs clearance in the sender's country;
  • Export;
  • Import;
  • Customs clearance by the receiving postal service;
  • Sorting of parcels by the receiving postal service;
  • Delivery of the parcel to the recipient.

The state postal operator of Spain has its full name Sociedad Estatal Correos y Telegrafos, S.A., and is abbreviated simply as Correos, which translates to “mail” in Spanish. The history of this organization dates back to the Middle Ages - first letters were delivered by messengers, and then by postal carriages. Nowadays, the Spanish Post provides the population and organizations with services for sending physical and electronic correspondence.

Correos is included in Correos Group- a corporation wholly owned by the Spanish government. Other members of the Correos Group provide additional communications functions: Nexea handles large business mailings, ChronoExpres provides express delivery capabilities, and Correos Telecom builds telecommunications networks for organizations.

The Spanish postal system also includes the post office of the Principality of Andorra, a small state located between Spain and France. This is due to the fact that Andorra, unlike Spain, is not a member of the Universal Postal Union (UPU).

Sending Correos from Spain

To send a parcel or small package, you must go to the post office and fill out an address form in Spanish and English. You can bring the parcel already packed, because... It is usually not inspected upon dispatch, although post office employees have the right to do so.

The classification of postal items in Spain is standard.

An item weighing up to 2 kg is called a small package or letter, an item weighing from 2 to 30 kg is called a parcel. Parcels must be accompanied by a completed declaration detailing the exact contents and estimated value.

The cost of sending a small package is fixed and amounts to 19.80 euros with the “simple” status and 22.24 euros with the “registered” status; the cost of the parcel is determined in accordance with its weight and volume.

Dimensions restrictions include both minimum (9x14 cm for all types of shipments) and maximum values:

  • for small packages - no more than 90 cm in the sum of three dimensions with the length of each side no more than 60 cm;
  • for parcels - no more than 200 cm in the sum of three dimensions with the length of each side no more than 105 cm.

The content restriction includes only a list of substances and items recognized as dangerous in accordance with the rules of the International Air Transport Association. However, when packing a parcel, one should not forget about the import rules in force in the country where the parcel will be sent.

Express delivery

Spain is part of the international courier service EMS, and the operator Correos is the representative of this service, ensuring the delivery of EMS items throughout Spain.

To send a parcel by courier, you must inform any post office in Spain that you want to use the services of EMS Postal Exprés. When filling out the address form, the country and city must be indicated in English, but it is better to write the exact address (when sending to Russia) in Russian, this will minimize the possibility of errors when delivered by courier in the addressee’s city.

The size restrictions for EMS shipments are 200 cm in the sum of three dimensions - with the condition of no more than 100 cm in length on each side.

Postal tracking

As in other countries that are members of the Universal Postal Union, in Spain only registered mail items are subject to tracking. They are assigned a unique track number compiled in accordance with the S10 UPU standard. According to this standard, the number consists of 13 characters, where the first corresponds to the type of item, and the second helps to increase the uniqueness of the number. The next 9 digits represent a numeric code, and the last two letters indicate in abbreviated form the name of the sender's country.

In particular, the first letter of the track number for small packages will be R, for parcels – C, for EMS shipments – E. The second character can be any letter of the Latin alphabet, the numeric code of nine characters can be arbitrary, and the final characters in the case of sending a parcel from Spain will be standard - ES. Information about the recipient's country is not included in the track number.

To track a mail item equipped with a track number, you should enter this number in the appropriate field on the tracking page of the official Correos website or simply use the field labeled CÓDIGO DE ENVÍO, which is available on any page of the site.

When the postal item has left Spain, tracking should be done on the website of the postal operator of the recipient country. If you sent a parcel via the EMS service, then its status will be displayed on the Correos website, but in a somewhat simplified form - only the most important stages.
