Shikhany, Bashkiria: a pleasant route for a weekend

For many years now it has turned out that we spend the May holidays in our native Bashkiria, in Ufa. And usually a few days spent in our metropolis are enough for me to vomit back home like Stirlitz was really drawn to somewhere in nature (although an easy departure actually took place - either my body reacts so hard to the local ecology, or something else) -That)

Now I didn’t have much energy or time to go somewhere far away. But one evening, when my son and I were walking near the Congress Hall and saw a stand with a picture of Shikhan near Sterlitamak, my little one told me:

- Mom, we haven’t gone up the mountain for a long time! Let's go up that mountain over there, shall we?

This is probably the most pleasant moment for any parent - when your child is imbued with your values ​​and asks to “continue the banquet”... And so the next day we drove along the road towards Sterlitamak, towards a sunny day. And the mountains.

Background

An object called Shihany, is located in the Sterlitamak region of the republic. These mountains do not belong to the Ural Mountains and generally have a completely different origin. In ancient times, there was an ocean in this area, and Shihany nothing more than the remains of an ancient coral reef, or, to put it simply, a shell cemetery.

But the word “shikhan” itself is a definition, not a proper name. This is a separate hill. And there are four such hills near Sterlitamak - Toratau, Shakhtau, Yuraktau and Kushtau (but one - Shakhtau - was almost completely razed for production needs).

But in this case, the word became precisely the name of the mountains, which are a symbol Bashkiria for many years and have made this region attractive to curious tourists like us)).

How to get there

Naturally, you will need to get there first.

Sterilitamak is 120 km from Ufa. And all these 120 km are an excellent 4-lane road. We got there by car in an hour. They didn’t even notice during the conversations how the pipes of the Sterlitamak industrial zone appeared. And a characteristic technical smell. Having driven to the first ring in the city, we go left and for another 5 minutes we see typical industrial landscapes outside the window:

- Look! Look, the cable car and the carriages! - the son shouts. — Will we go to the mountain in them?

- These are not trailers, but trolleys. And they carry goods, not people. “We’ll go up the mountain on foot,” we explain.

We leave the industrial zone and again look for a left turn. Having passed the “rickety” road bridge, we break out into the open spaces. Shihany - straight ahead:

We're passing by Shikhana Kushtau . It is the largest in area and has the shape of an elongated ridge with three peaks. In winter, a ski resort of the same name operates on Kushtau. The last time I skated here was 10-12 years ago. Since then, new slopes and lifts have appeared. And even small hotel complexes appeared.

So, if you want to stay overnight, then theoretically this is not a problem.

Our goal is Shikhan Yuraktau , the northernmost of the shihans, with the most regular shape in the form of an inverted cone. From a distance it even looks like Fuji, only there is a little lack of snow at the top)

The last couple of kilometers we drive on a dirt road. Now it is more or less dry, but I think that just a couple of weeks ago it was possible to get stuck in a rut here.

Way to the top

Having parked the car at the foot of Yuraktau, we begin to climb along the path on the southern side of the mountain. Its height is 338 m above sea level and 220 m from the base. When I climbed Yuraktau for the first time, it was a whole quest for me. I remember how sweat poured from my forehead and my breathing became unsteady. But now, with many trails in the Caucasus Nature Reserve behind us, the upcoming 220 meters of elevation change seem like a child’s walk. I note the time so that I know how long the climb takes. Let's go, guys!

But literally after 20 meters we get a “surprise” in the form of a whole ball of snakes. To be honest, I have never seen so many of them - about 10 pieces of different sizes! From the rustle of our feet, they begin to crawl out of their ball in different directions. And last year’s dry grass rustles ominously around us...

Actually, we're a little scared. The children even start whining - maybe we shouldn’t go to the mountain? We reassure them that snakes are lazy and they don’t crawl up, they only live below. Having calmed down, we climb further. The weather on this day pleases us with a picturesque play of light and shadows. And soon we forget about snakes...

The rocky path climbs upward all the time. And although the climb is not too steep, the pebbles slipping from under your feet are annoying. But we don’t risk walking on the grass—those snakes might be there.

We climb to the saddle in 20 minutes. To be honest, everything went so quickly compared to the first time that when I saw the view on the other side of the mountain, I felt a slight amazement - is it all over?

From here to the very top I didn’t time the time - I think the walk there took less than 5 minutes. At the top we have a small picnic: vegetables, fruits, water.

On the other side of the hill, another group of tourists rises - young boys and girls. At this top point our trajectories intersect: then we go down along the path on the eastern slope where they climbed and vice versa - they go down along our path.

We are organizing a small social competition to see who can go down the fastest. Look, see them in the next photo?

I’ll say right away that we went down faster. The gusts of wind brought rain clouds, and we did not want to go down in the rain, on wet stones.

We inspect ourselves for ticks - everything is clean. And only after that we get into the car. Almost at the same minute, the first large drops of rain cover the windshield.

In total, we spent a little over an hour going up and down. Another 15-20 minutes for a picnic at the top. We wanted to take a rest after descending from the mountain, but the weather got in the way.

And so, for a family walk in nature, Shikhany is a great place. Children won't have time to get bored, and you won't have time to get tired. So take note. We also saw climbers training on the rocks on the western side.

We did not take the return route through Sterlitamak, but decided to modify it and drove towards Krasnousolsk, along a dirt road. After about 15 kilometers it turns into normal asphalt. And we get to Krasnousolsk in an hour. Krasnousolsk is a very popular resort in Bashkiria. It's not cheap to vacation here. But you can live not in the sanatorium itself, but find accommodation nearby and go to the sanatorium only for procedures.

It’s also nice to stroll through its well-groomed and beautiful grounds and visit the temple on the hill. This takes us another hour and a half:

It was getting dark and ducks were flying over the lake. And some had already lost so much fear that they lay calmly on the shore two steps away from us.

For some reason, not a single stall or shop near the entrance to the sanatorium was open this time. I remember once we bought good Bashkir honey here...

And there were almost no tourists besides us. There was only one car in the parking lot besides us. Is it not the season yet?

And that was enough impressions for us. We set out on the way back and an hour later we were already in Ufa.

Shihan recreation centers are popular among tourists who prefer to spend a relaxing weekend surrounded by family or friends. Ecologically clean environment, picturesque nature around - all this best sets the mood for a relaxing holiday. There are quite a lot of recreation centers located near the city limits. In this regard, people often rent them for the entire summer period and go to work from there.
